Privacy policy

This policy covers oilandmiles.com (“the site”, “we”, “us”). Questions about it go to contact@oilandmiles.com.

The short version

We do not ask you to register, we do not run a contact form, and we do not sell anything directly. The data that gets collected is mostly collected by our advertising and analytics providers, not by us, and the sections below say exactly which ones and what you can do about it.

What we collect ourselves

  • Almost nothing you type. There is no account and no comment section. At the end of each article there is one question, Did this answer your question? Answering no opens a short form, and the contact page carries the same form. Only the message is required; the name and email boxes are optional, and leaving them blank still sends the note. What we store is what you typed, the article you were on and the time. We do not store your IP address, your browser or anything else that could tie two messages to the same person. It goes to a database on the same Cloudflare account that serves this site, and nowhere else. If you give an email address we use it to reply and for nothing else.
  • Email you send us. If you write to us, we keep the message and your address for as long as it takes to deal with it and to keep a record of corrections. We do not add you to any list.
  • Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard request data, meaning IP address, browser, page requested and time, for security and troubleshooting. We do not use these logs to build a profile of you.
  • A theme preference. If you switch between light and dark mode, that choice is stored in your own browser's local storage under the key oilandmiles.theme. It never leaves your device and it is not a tracking identifier. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Advertising

The site carries third-party advertising.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this site or other sites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites.
  • You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
  • You can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.com.

Where required by law, a consent notice is shown before non-essential advertising cookies are set, and you can change or withdraw that consent at any time through the same notice.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which articles are read and roughly where readers come from: page views, referring sites, approximate country and device type. IP addresses are anonymized. In the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland nothing loads until you accept the consent notice; elsewhere, measurement starts once you scroll or tap, or after eight seconds, whichever comes first, and you can switch it off at any time via Cookie settings in the footer. We do not use it to identify individuals, and we do not combine it with any other data about you.

At the end of each article there is one question, Did this answer your question?, with a yes and a no. Pressing either sends Google Analytics two things and nothing else: which article you were reading, and which of the two you pressed. There is no free-text box, nothing is tied to you, and the article is the only thing recorded. Your answer is also kept in your own browser so the question is not asked again on a page you have already answered; that copy never leaves your device, and clearing your browser data removes it.

Session recording

We use Microsoft Clarity to see how pages are actually used: where the cursor moves, how far people scroll, and what they click. It builds a replay of the interaction with the page, not a recording of you, and we use it to find the places where an article stops making sense. It loads on exactly the same gate as Google Analytics above: in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland nothing loads until you accept the consent notice, nothing loads at all if you decline, and you can switch it off at any time via Cookie settings in the footer.

Anything typed into a box is hidden before it leaves your browser. Microsoft masks the contents of input fields and drop-down menus in every mode, so the figures you enter into our calculators are not recorded and never reach Clarity. Its default setting also treats numbers and email addresses in ordinary page text as sensitive and masks those too.

What we never do

  • Sell or rent your personal information.
  • Ask for payment details, passwords or identity documents. This site has no reason to want them, and any page claiming otherwise is not ours.
  • Email you unless you emailed us first.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to processing, or to receive a copy of it. Because we hold almost nothing, this is usually a very short conversation. Write to contact@oilandmiles.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Readers in the EU and UK: our legal basis for the limited processing described above is legitimate interest for security and site operation, and consent for advertising and analytics cookies. Readers in California: we do not sell personal information as that term is defined under the CCPA.

Articles link to manufacturers, regulators and other publications. Once you follow a link, that site's privacy policy applies, not this one. We do not control what they collect.

Children

This site is aimed at adults who own cars. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to us and it will be deleted.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects you, the date at the top changes and the change is described here. Continuing to use the site after that means you accept the revised policy.
