The Most Complained-About Cars 2010-2025
We counted the owner complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2010 to 2025, once per make, model and model year, and show the part owners name most for each. These are reports, not failure rates, from vehicles with at least 10 complaints, and the whole method is on this page.

Key findings
The 2010 Ford Fusion has the most complaints of any vehicle from model years 2010-2025: 5,126, with steering named most (1,640 of them).
Ford holds 17 of the 25 most complained-about vehicles, and 45 of the top 100.
Ford accounts for 20.8% of all 625,987 complaints in the file; Chevrolet is next at 9.3%.
Power train is the component named most in 9 of the top 25 vehicles; steering in 6.
The only vehicle from model year 2023 or newer in the top 100 is the 2023 Tesla Model Y, with 1,134 complaints.
The 25 vehicles with the most complaints
Complaints filed with NHTSA per vehicle, model years 2010-2025, and the component named most often.
The strip marks other model years where the same model had the same component named most. Counts of reports, not rates.

What the table shows
In numbers. 625,987 complaints across 4,087 make, model and year combinations, model years 2010-2025.
The 2010 Ford Fusion leads with 5,126, steering named most (1,640); Ford is named in about 21 of every 100 complaints, Chevrolet in about 9.
Ford holds eight of the twelve most complained-about vehicles, and two components lead six of them: steering on the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Fusion and the power train on the 2012 and 2014 Focus and the 2013 F-150.
A shared component name doesn't prove a single defect. One make with two components named again and again, across several model years, fills most of a table like this.
These numbers count reports, not failures. A car that sold in huge numbers, or drew a recall and news coverage, collects more complaints than a rarer car with a worse record.
Repeats tell you more than the ranking does. The Escape appears for 2013 and 2017 with the engine named most both times, and the 2017 drew more engine complaints (1,555 against 1,264) even though its total was lower.
The Tesla Model Y repeats too, for 2021 and 2023, with owners naming forward collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control. One bad year doesn't show a pattern, but the same part named two model years apart is worth checking.
Makes by share of all complaints
Share of the 625,987 complaints in the file. A make that sells more cars tends to draw more complaints from its owners; this is volume as much as anything.

Complaints by model year
Older model years have had longer to accumulate filings, and the newest are still filling in; the shape says as much about time as about the cars.

What this data can't tell you
- It's not a failure rate. The file doesn't know how many of each vehicle were sold, so a car that sold in huge numbers can collect more filings than a rare car with a worse record. Rankings that divide by cars sold put other models first (see the comparison below); this edition doesn't, because we have no sales file we can source and publish.
- It's not verified. Filing is voluntary, and NHTSA doesn't confirm each owner's diagnosis; it reviews complaints to spot possible safety problems. A recall, a lawsuit or a news cycle sends owners to the form, and that shows up as a spike that is partly the news and partly the car.
- It's not evenly aged. A 2010 model year has had about seventeen years on the road to collect reports, a 2025 model year about two. Comparing counts across model years compares time as much as cars, which is why the newest years get their own table.
- It's not a verdict on a part. "Named most" is the component owners mentioned most often, not a diagnosis; a complaint can name several parts.
- It's not complete below ten. Vehicles with fewer than 10 complaints are left out of this report and of our complaint lookup, so a rare model with a real problem can be missing from both; NHTSA's own complaint search still lists it.
How this was counted
- The source is NHTSA's full downloadable complaint file, dated 2026-08-25, so every model year comes from one copy that can be archived and counted again.
- One complaint, one vehicle. Each complaint is counted once per make, model and model year and once per component, deduplicated on the complaint number. A complaint can sit on several rows of NHTSA's file, one per component or product.
- Models are grouped as NHTSA records them, with names written as the carmaker spells them, and we don't merge name variants. Components keep NHTSA's names too, sub-levels included (for example, forward collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control), with its colon written as a comma.
- The file covers every vehicle type NHTSA takes complaints for, so a few motorcycles, RVs and trailers sit among the cars, SUVs and pickups.
- Ten is the floor. Vehicles with fewer than 10 complaints are left out. Below that a single owner moves the ranking.
- Components are mentions. A complaint that names an engine and a fuel system counts once under each, so component totals exceed complaint totals, and "unknown or other" is left out of the "named most" column because nobody can act on it.
How this compares with other rankings
Other rankings measure different things, so their leaders differ from ours. iSeeCars ranks complaints per 10,000 vehicles sold for model years 2005 to 2016, leaving out models that sold fewer than 750,000.
Lemon Law Experts counted complaints filed from 2015 to 2026 per 100,000 sales, which puts the Chrysler Town & Country first.
CarComplaints.com sets NHTSA filings beside its own reader reports, one page per model year.
This page counts raw filings once per vehicle from the bulk file, model years 2010-2025, with a floor of 10. It says which vehicles owners wrote to the regulator about most, not which failed most often.
A rate shows how often owners report relative to cars sold; a count shows where the reports pile up. Read the two side by side.
