2001 and 2002 Civic: unrepaired Takata air bag inflator
NHTSA and Honda urge owners not to drive these cars. Look up the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and call a dealer for the free repair. NHTSA’s Takata page also says to ask the dealer about a loaner, which dealers are not required to give.

Honda Civic crash tests and investigations
NHTSA gives the Honda Civic an overall 5 of 5 for the 2016–2025 model years, an overall 3 of 5 for the 2011 model year and an overall 4 or 5 of 5 depending on the version for the 2012–2015 model years. The frontal score is 5 for the 2021, 4 for the 2011, 2013–2015 and 2022–2025, and 4 or 5 depending on the version for the 2012 and 2016–2020.
NHTSA started its current 5-star test system with the 2011 model year, so older ratings are not comparable and we do not show them. Separately, NHTSA’s defect office has had 8 probes on Civic model years, and two of them are still open.

Honda Civic model years compared
Each score from 1 to 5 compares one Honda Civic model year with the other Honda Civic model years only. It is not a reliability rating, and it says nothing about how the Honda Civic compares with another car. A 5 means that year scores highest among the Honda Civic model years, a 1 means it scores lowest. The 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 are too new to judge and carry no score.

Best counts model years from 2011 on, so an older year can score 4 here and still not be listed in the Best years.
How the score is built: each year is compared with the typical Honda Civic year over its first five years on the road, using complaints (40%), serious complaints that report a crash, fire, injury or death (40%), recalls (15%) and open NHTSA probes (5%). A 4 is better than most other years and sits in a Next best tier under the Best years when fewer than five years from 2011 on score 5. A year with a recall that tells owners not to drive it scores 1.
Years under five years old get no score. Source: NHTSA owner complaints, federal file of Aug 25, 2026, and NHTSA recall campaigns, read Oct 31, 2026. The open probes come from the NHTSA defect investigations file of Oct 30, 2026. The counts in the “Model years compared” table are for those first five years. The complaint and recall totals on each year card cover all years on file, so they are larger.
Honda Civic recalls by year
The 2001 Honda Civic leads with 27 recall campaigns, most often for exterior lighting, and the 2002 and 2003 follow with 24 each. Every other year has 0–18, most often for the airbag system (13 of the 22 other years with a recall).
By federal law a carmaker must repair a recalled car for free unless it was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the maker sent the recall notice or NHTSA ordered the recall, whichever came first. Many makers fix older cars anyway, so ask a Honda dealer with your VIN. Your VIN shows which campaigns are still open on a car.
Certain 2022–2025 Civic cars (hatchback, hybrid and Type R included) and other Honda models: steering gearbox
The steering gearbox may have been built wrongly, which can make the car hard to steer and raise the risk of a crash. Dealers replace a spring and add grease for free. Check your VIN.

2014 Civic: red brake system indicator
When the red brake system indicator comes on, have the vehicle repaired immediately. It is dangerous to drive with low brake fluid. If there is no resistance from the brake pedal, stop immediately in a safe place (page 437).
Source: Honda 2014 Civic Owner’s Manual, read October 31, 2026.
Recalls over 15 years old do not show
NHTSA’s lookup leaves them out, except where the maker offers more coverage, so ask a dealer about any older car.

Honda Civic complaints by generation
The Civic changed generation in 2001, 2006, 2012, 2016 and 2022, so the model years fall into six groups. Honda called the 2012 and 2022 Civic all-new. The eighth generation, 2006–2011, drew the most complaints at 4,481, and the tenth generation, 2016–2021, follows with 3,164, led by the 2016. Counts are raw NHTSA complaints, not adjusted for how many cars were sold or how often owners filed in each era.
NHTSA files the Civic Hybrid, Si, Type R, Hatchback and GX under their own names, so they are not counted here.
Honda Civic complaints by year
The table lists every Civic model year in NHTSA’s file, 2000–2025, with its complaint count and the system owners named most. The 2006 leads with 1,402 complaints, most about the engine, and the 2007 follows with 1,204, most about the suspension. The verdict for each year uses the same scores as the cards at the top of the page. This table counts every complaint on file for each year, while the Model years compared table scores each year on its first five years only.

Questions people ask
What are the Honda Civic years to avoid?
Avoid the 2001, 2002, 2006 and 2007 Honda Civic, the years that score worst against the other Civic model years, and check the 2016 before you buy, the one of the five years to check with the weakest numbers. Counting every complaint filed so far, the 2001 complaints most often name the powertrain, and the 2002 complaints name the airbag system.
Which Honda Civic year scores highest?
From 2011 on, the 2011 and 2021 Honda Civic each score 5 of 5 against the other Civic model years. The score counts complaints, serious complaints, recalls and open NHTSA probes, so it is not a reliability rating.
What is the most common problem with the Honda Civic?
The steering, named in 2,464 owner complaints across the 2000–2025 Civic and the top system in 9 of the 26 model years. The airbag system follows with 2,304, then the powertrain with 1,578.
Which Honda Civic years have the most recalls?
The 2001 Honda Civic leads with 27 recall campaigns, most often for exterior lighting, and the 2002 and 2003 follow with 24 each. By federal law a carmaker must repair a recalled car for free unless it was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the maker sent the recall notice or NHTSA ordered the recall, whichever came first.
Which Honda Civic years are best to buy?
From 2011 on, the 2011 and 2021 score best against the other Civic model years, and the 2013, 2020 and 2019 score better than most. Check that every recall was done.
Does the Honda Civic have an air conditioning condenser problem?
Honda extended the air conditioning condenser warranty on the 2016–2021 Civic to 10 years from the original date of purchase, with unlimited miles. Honda raised the original 3 years to 10 years with unlimited miles.
Is there a recall on the Honda Civic air conditioning condenser?
No, we found no NHTSA recall for the air conditioning in the Civic recall file. A Honda bulletin extends the condenser on 2016–2020 two- and four-door Civics and 2017–2021 five-door Civics to 10 years with no mileage limit from the original date of purchase, for a condenser that was defective from the factory, and a Honda dealer can confirm a car by its VIN.
Which Honda Civic years does the air conditioning condenser extension cover?
Honda’s bulletin lists the 2016–2020 two- and four-door Civic and the 2017–2021 five-door Civic, so a Civic from another model year is not on it. The Type R is not on it and has its own bulletin.
Do 2016–2018 Honda Civics with the 1.5L dilute oil or fail camshafts?
Honda extended the camshaft and rocker arm warranty on 2016–2018 Civics with the 1.5L to 6 years with unlimited miles from the original date of sale, for engine oil dilution drivability problems and a whirling engine noise. That term has run out for these cars.
