How we sort the years Our score vs other Camry years
Best Score 5 of 5
Check before you buy Score 2 of 5
Avoid Score 1 of 5
Each year scores 1 to 5 against other Camry years only, never against another car. The score uses complaints, serious complaints, recalls and open NHTSA probes from the year’s first five years. A do-not-drive recall means 1, years under five years old get no score, and Best starts at 2011. Complaints are not failure rates.
Do not drive

NHTSA’s recall file flags the 2023 wheels recall as Do Not Drive. It covers certain builds only, so check your VIN.

Toyota Camry years to avoid

Safety recall alert

2023 Camry

A recall tells owners of certain 2023 Camry and Camry Hybrid cars not to drive them until the repair is done, because the lug nuts may be loose and a wheel can detach. A Toyota dealer fixes it for free. Check your VIN.

Toyota Camry crash tests and investigations

NHTSA gives the Toyota Camry an overall 5 of 5 for the 2012–2024 model years and an overall 3 or 4 of 5 depending on the version for the 2011 model year. The frontal score is 5 for the 2018–2024, 4 for the 2012–2017 and 3 for the 2011. NHTSA started its current 5-star test system with the 2011 model year, so older ratings are not comparable and we do not show them.

Separately, NHTSA’s defect office has had 4 probes on Camry model years, and none of them is still open. NHTSA also handled petitions about engine seizure (DP02004, closed Jun 20, 2002), vehicle speed control (DP05002, closed Jan 5, 2006), and engine surging (DP06003, closed Apr 3, 2007).

Toyota Camry model years compared

Each score from 1 to 5 compares one Toyota Camry model year with the other Toyota Camry model years only. It is not a reliability rating, and it says nothing about how the Toyota Camry compares with another car. A 5 means that year scores highest among the Toyota Camry model years, a 1 means it scores lowest. The 2022, 2023 and 2024 are too new to judge and carry no score.

Best counts model years from 2011 on, so an older year can score 4 here and still not be listed in the Best years.

How the score is built: each year is compared with the typical Toyota Camry year over its first five years on the road, using complaints (40%), serious complaints that report a crash, fire, injury or death (40%), recalls (15%) and open NHTSA probes (5%). A 4 is better than most other years and sits in a Next best tier under the Best years when fewer than five years from 2011 on score 5. A year with a recall that tells owners not to drive it scores 1 (a year too new to score shows that recall as a safety recall alert instead).

Years under five years old get no score. Source: NHTSA owner complaints, federal file of Aug 25, 2026, and NHTSA recall campaigns, read Oct 31, 2026. The open probes come from the NHTSA defect investigations file of Oct 30, 2026. The counts in the “Model years compared” table are for those first five years. The complaint and recall totals on each year card cover all years on file, so they are larger.

Toyota Camry recalls by year

The 2007 and 2009 Toyota Camry tie with 10 recall campaigns each, the 2007 most often for equipment and the 2009 most often for the seat, and the 2010 follows with 9, then the 2008 and 2018 with 8 each. Every other year has 1–6, most often for the airbag system (9 of the 20 other years with a recall).

By federal law a carmaker must repair a recalled car for free unless it was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the maker sent the recall notice or NHTSA ordered the recall, whichever came first. Many makers fix older cars anyway, so ask a Toyota dealer with your VIN. Your VIN shows which campaigns are still open on a car.

Recalls 09V-388 and 10V-017

Recall 09V-388 covers 2007–2010 Camry and Camry Hybrid cars: the accelerator pedal can be trapped by an unsecured or incompatible driver’s floor mat. Recall 10V-017 covers 2007–2010 Camry cars with a sticking accelerator pedal. Dealers repair both for free. Check your VIN.

Takata list

No entry on NHTSA’s Takata air bag Do Not Drive list for the Camry. Recall 23V-432 separately told owners not to drive.

Owner’s manual

2012 Camry: brake system warning light

If the brake system warning light comes on, stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place and contact a Toyota dealer. Continuing to drive may be dangerous (page 420). Do not pump the brake pedal if the engine stalls, because each push on the pedal uses up the reserve for the power-assisted brakes (page 143).

VIN lookup

Recalls over 15 years old do not show

NHTSA’s lookup leaves them out, except where the maker offers more coverage, so ask a dealer about any older car.

Look up your own car by VIN before anything else on this page.

Ask a Toyota dealer to check your VIN for open recalls. Enter the 17-character VIN to see which campaigns are still open on one car. The lookup leaves out recalls older than 15 years.

Toyota Camry complaints by generation

The Camry changed generation in 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2018, so the model years fall into five groups. Toyota called the 2012 and 2018 Camry all-new. The sixth generation, 2007–2011, drew the most complaints at 6,311, and the fifth generation, 2002–2006, follows with 3,409, led by the 2002. Each model year below is colored by its verdict, so you can see which years pull a generation’s total up.

Counts are raw NHTSA complaints, not adjusted for how many cars were sold or how often owners filed in each era.

NHTSA files the 2025 Camry, which Toyota sells only as a hybrid, under Camry Hybrid, so this page stops at the 2024 model year.

Toyota Camry complaints by year

The table lists every Camry model year in NHTSA’s file, 2000–2024, with its complaint count and the system owners named most. The 2007 leads with 2,886 complaints, most about the throttle and speed control, and the 2009 follows with 1,293, most about the throttle and speed control.

The verdict for each year uses the same scores as the cards at the top of the page. This table counts every complaint on file for each year, while the Model years compared table scores each year on its first five years only.

Questions people ask

What are the Toyota Camry years to avoid?

Avoid the 2007 and 2009 Toyota Camry, the years that score worst against the other Camry model years, and check the 2002, 2010 and 2018 before you buy, the three of the five years to check with the weakest numbers. Also check any 2023 for a recall (do not drive, certain builds).

Which Toyota Camry year scores highest?

From 2011 on, the 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021 Toyota Camry each score 5 of 5 against the other Camry model years. The score counts complaints, serious complaints, recalls and open NHTSA probes, so it is not a reliability rating.

What is the most common problem with the Toyota Camry?

The throttle and speed control, named in 2,786 owner complaints across the 2000–2024 Camry and the top system in 9 of the 25 model years. The powertrain follows with 1,516, then the engine with 1,464.

Which Toyota Camry years have the most recalls?

The 2007 and 2009 Toyota Camry tie with 10 recall campaigns each, the 2007 most often for equipment and the 2009 most often for the seat, and the 2010 follows with 9, then the 2008 and 2018 with 8 each. By federal law a carmaker must repair a recalled car for free unless it was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the maker sent the recall notice or NHTSA ordered the recall, whichever came first.

Which Toyota Camry years are best to buy?

From 2011 on, the 2021, 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2016 score best against the other Camry model years. Check that every recall was done.

Does the Toyota Camry have a high-pressure fuel pump problem?

Toyota extended the high-pressure fuel pump warranty on the 2018–2022 Camry with the 2GR V6 to 10 years from the date of first use, with no mileage limit. For this program Toyota counts 10 years from each vehicle’s own first use, so the oldest ones run out first.

Which Toyota Camry years had an oil consumption program?

A Toyota warranty enhancement covered excessive oil consumption on 2007–2009 Camrys with the 2AZ-FE engine for 10 years or 150,000 miles from first use. The program has ended for these cars, and Toyota’s document lists no later gas Camry years, only the 2007–2011 Camry Hybrid.

Why is my Toyota Camry dashboard sticky or melting?

Toyota extended the dashboard warranty on 2007–2011 Camrys to 10 years from first use. That term has run out for these cars.
