449 complaints, 33% of the total
half of the steering reports that give a mileage came before this
35 mention an injury, 14 a fire
The steering leads the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu record at 33%, with electrical system next at 21%. Of the steering reports that give a mileage, half came before 100,000 miles. The costliest part on our cost list is the electric power steering column, $253 for the part alone.
It's a count of reports, not a failure rate. Use it to decide what to inspect before buying, not to grade the car.
Steering complaints lead the file, most of them about losing the electric power steering assist, often with a steering warning on the dash.
Many electrical, lighting and brake complaints describe brake lights that fail or stay on, with stability-control warnings. GM recall 14V-252 covers a body control module connection that can upset the brake apply sensor circuit, and the dealer fixes the connection free.

Is the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners filed more complaints about the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu than about any other Malibu year, and the steering draws the largest share. The four checks below are what the federal record can say; none of them is a reliability score.
- 1stCompared with other Malibu years1,359 complaints, the most of 16 model years (next is 2011 with 976).By model year
- 33%The system named mostSteering, in 449 complaints. Half of the steering reports that give a mileage came before 100,000 miles.Problems by system

Brand new 2010 chevrolet malibu leaks when rains and it runs into my floorboard, airbags and wire harness causing car to short out. Most of the time the lights in dash won't work.
2005 malibu maxx... Power steering lock up.. Luckily each time it has happened I was traveling at low speed or just after starting the engine I would get he power steering alarm. Turn the engine off and restart the problem is gone. Could have been disastrous at high speed on a crooked road.
May 4th 2018 I was driving and steering wheel started to shake and tighten up, I pulled over and put on hazard lights , it felt if I had a flat tire , power steering light came on, I shut car off that turned back on proceeded to pull on to highway and car seemed fine again , I am scared to drive.
I put brand new rims and tires on the 2010 malibu and received an alignment. About 20 minutes later while driving on the highway my steering wheel locked up and my esc power steering lights came on! Fortunately I was not injured.

Usually starts around 100,000 miles. Half of owners reported it between 75,000 and 135,000.

Followed safety recall letter instructions to schedule installation of body control module part kooz chevy dealer in white marsh, md says they do not have part and will take 3 weeks to order I object to this failure since letter says to act quickly since I am at risk of crash.
The brake lights are engaged while driving the car and disengage when braking causing a serious safety hazard for not only he driver but others following behind. Because the brake lights are on while driving following cars crash detection systems engage. This has been going on for quite awhile. It was "fixed" by a chevrolet dealership once already but it is back. Huge concern for my 17 year old driving the car.

Brand new 2010 chevrolet malibu leaks when rains and it runs into my floorboard, airbags and wire harness causing car to short out. Most of the time the lights in dash won't work.
While driving , if the keys are wiggled the electrical system shuts down. Total system shut down. Wiggle keys around and wait 2 min.+-, car will start and drive ok. Has happened 2 times so far. Taking to chevy dealer on 12/7/2015.
I was turning onto a freeway on ramp when a engine power reduced message came up on my dashboard. The cars speed then dropped to about 10 miles an hour and started shaking violently. Thankfully I was only moving at about 30 mph and was able to pull to the shoulder safely.
The body control module (bcm) went out and the dealer or gm will not pay for the repairs despite there being known issues and recalls involving issues with the bcm. The gauge will not work correctly, the lights flicker, the shifting is affected, etc. Please see recalls 14v252000, 14v252000, 14v252000 & 14v252000.

Esc service light comes on intermittently, brake lights are illuminated 100 % of the time, and cruise control doesn't work. The dealer did the recall a year ago and now I have these issues. Replaced brake position and reprogram for $140 but didn't fix. Dealer now wants to replace abs modulator valve, bcm, and abs control module for 1450.
The brake light comes on when the brakes are not being depressed and goes off when it is being depressed. This disengages the cruise control and also the service esc light comes on when it happens. The 2014 recall was done by the dealer and yet the problem keeps occurring. There was an update to the recall and this was also done but has not fixed the problem. This issue seems to happen intermittently and randomly.

Driving my 2010 chevy malibu at about 35mph entering a curve with brake pushed the esc activated and felt like the brakes wasn't working. Since march 2013 it does this continuously off and on then it turns itself off and says service esc, but no codes found.
Dealership states that all they have to fix according to recall 13036 is the body control module. The traction control and electronic stability control, illumination light flashing off and on saying service soon, although mentioned in recall letter, is not included and we must pay over $350 to repair to problem.
1. Difficulty putting car in gear need to put excessive brake pressure to change gears 2. "service esc" "service traction" light flash daily 3. Brake lights are often engaged and or won't engage 4. Cruise control won't engage effectively all of these things happen while driving and in a parked position

2010 chevrolet malibu brake lights stay on without brake pedal being pressed and go off once pedal is pressed...this is a serious issue that I have researched and found common among this model and other gm models. I believe that a recall should be issue immediately to fix this issue.

Service air bag info comes on. Never know when. May be connected to seat movement. Passenger seat, I think. Has did this occasionally fo 2 years. Always went off before. Now staying on. Recall on air bag service connecter in 2011 completed. Seems to have come on also while braking hard.
The airbag warning light is on my 2010 chevy malibu I bought 2 months ago. A brand new car with 6 miles when I bought it. I took the car to the dealership since last week tuesday and the car is still there. I was told that there was a problem with the airbag connector and that they are still waiting for the part.
