Brake Warning Light: What It Means and Is It Safe to Drive?

The brake warning light is the red one that reads BRAKE or shows an exclamation mark inside a circle. One lamp does several jobs, which is why the same light can mean a parking brake you forgot or a leak you can't see.

Federal brake standard FMVSS 135 decides what must turn it on, and each carmaker's manual says what to do next. They don't all say the same thing: GM and Nissan talk about towing, Toyota says to stop at once, and Honda says to test the pedal first.

We read the rule, twelve owner's manuals, the recalls and the bulletins carmakers send their dealers. Then we priced the parts behind the light, one car at a time.

What does the brake warning light mean?

It means one of the conditions the federal brake rule lists has happened, and a car may use one red lamp for all of them. FMVSS 135 requires the light for these, on cars built since 2000 and on light trucks, SUVs and vans up to 7,716 pounds built since 2002:

• The parking brake is onThe one condition you can clear yourself in a second.
• The brake fluid is lowBelow the carmaker's safe level, or below a quarter of the reservoir, whichever is higher.
• Part of the system lost pressureA big loss of fluid or pressure, like a burst brake line. The carmaker picks how the car detects it.
• An electrical fault in the ABSOn cars that report it on the shared red lamp instead of a separate yellow ABS light.
• Worn brake padsOnly where the carmaker chose a dash warning for pad wear. The rule also allows a warning sound instead, or a way to check the pads by eye.
• Electric brake faultsOn cars with electrically worked brakes or brakes that recharge the battery, a fault or a low charge in that system.

When one lamp covers two or more of these, the rule says it has to read BRAKE and be red. A carmaker can split them onto their own lamps instead, which then read Brake Fluid, Park or Parking Brake, or Brake Wear.

The light also checks itself: the rule requires a bulb check, and GM's, Hyundai's and Jeep's manuals light it briefly when you start the car. GM's manuals say that if it doesn't come on then, have it fixed so it's ready to warn you.

Is it safe to drive with the brake warning light on?

Not until you know why, unless it was only the parking brake. GM's manuals explain the reason: the car has two brake circuits, so one can still stop it if the other fails, but normal braking needs both.

The federal test shows how much the law allows that to cost. With one circuit failed, a car has to stop from 62 mph within 551 feet, where the full system has to manage 230.

The carmakers' manuals don't give the same order, and yours is the one to follow:

• GMPull off the road and stop carefully. If the light is still on, have the vehicle towed for service.
• ToyotaStop right away in a safe place and contact a dealer, because driving on may be dangerous.
• HondaPress the pedal lightly. If it feels normal, check the fluid at your next stop, and if there's no resistance, stop immediately in a safe place.
• HyundaiStop, check and add fluid, then look for a leak. If it leaks or the light stays on, don't drive.
• JeepPart of the brake system may have failed and the car will take longer to stop, so have it checked immediately.
• NissanWith the fluid below MIN, don't drive until the system is checked. Drive carefully to a service station only if you judge it safe, and otherwise have the car towed.
• FordThe brakes may not be working properly if the light stays on with the parking brake released.

Newer trucks add one more reason to pull over. GM's 2020 Silverado manual says a truck with electric brake boost may limit its own speed when the light comes on, and the pedal can feel harder or sink lower.

Stop driving if the pedal feels soft, sinks, or travels further than usual, whatever the light says. That's the same warning, felt through your foot.

Hyundai's 2023 Sonata manual adds a hard-to-push pedal and a pull to one side to the checks when you stop, and GM's Silverado manual warns that the truck could take longer to stop.

Why is my brake warning light on?

Because one of those conditions happened, or the car thinks it did. The owner's manuals and the bulletins carmakers send their dealers name these causes:

1. The parking brake isn't fully off

The parking brake switch shares the lamp, so a lever or pedal that isn't all the way down keeps it lit. Ford's 2014 F-150 manual says that if the parking brake is fully released and the lamp stays on, the brakes may not be working properly.

On cars with an electric parking brake, Toyota and Nissan show a fault in it on a yellow light. So a yellow parking brake light points at the electric parking brake, not low fluid.

2. Low fluid from worn pads

As pads wear, the level in the reservoir drops, and GM's 2017 Malibu manual says it goes back up when new pads go on. The same manual says there are only two reasons the level goes down: normal lining wear, or a leak.

Nissan told its dealers the same about 2007 to 2012 Altimas: a low level can come from normal pad wear, not because of any brake system malfunction (campaign PC125). Ask for the pads to be measured before anyone quotes other parts, and see what pads and rotors cost.

3. A leak, sometimes one you can't see

A leak lowers the level too, and GM's manual says the brakes won't work well until it's fixed. On some Fords the fluid leaks from the master cylinder into the brake booster, so there's no puddle, and the light and a change in pedal feel are the signs.

Ford recalled that leak four times, and a burst front hose on 2015 to 2018 Edges lights the fluid warning too (recall 20V469000). Look for wet spots at each wheel and behind the reservoir, and our guide to brake fluid leaks shows where else to look.

4. A false reading from a sensor, ground or software

Sometimes the light comes on with a full reservoir. Ford replaces the reservoir and its level sensor connector on 2021 to 2024 Broncos that show the red light with code C0049:01 (SSM 54431).

GM tells dealers to check two ground connections on 2014 and 2015 Malibus first if the fluid is above MIN (PIC6156). Jeep reprograms the brake module on 2022 and 2023 Wagoneers that light the lamp in the cold, and notes the brakes work as normal (08-241-23).

If the level sits between MIN and MAX, ask for a scan and a check of the grounds before anyone replaces a brake part.

5. A weak battery

On some GM trucks, low voltage sets a brake message on the driver display rather than the lamp. On 2019 Silverado and Sierra 1500s, GM traced a Service Brake System message, a hard pedal and limited speed to low voltage, and tells dealers to check the battery cable clamps first (PIT5634).

A later GM bulletin for 2022 to 2026 trucks and SUVs blames software for the same message, and says cold weather and a weak battery can make it worse (PIT6467C). If the message or light came with a hard pedal or a slow start, ask for the battery and its cable clamps to be checked first.

6. An ABS fault on the shared lamp

Some cars report an ABS fault on the red BRAKE lamp, alone or with the yellow ABS light. With both on, Hyundai and Honda say the brakes may not work normally and the car can be unstable in a hard stop, so treat the pair as a reason to stop.

7. A pad wear sensor

Where a carmaker chose an electrical warning for worn pads, it can share the BRAKE lamp or have its own, which the rule says must read Brake Wear. Many cars have none, because the rule allows a warning sound or a visual check instead, so a dark lamp doesn't prove the pads are fine.

We didn't find a carmaker document that says how many miles are left once it lights, so we don't give a figure. A burned-out rear brake bulb gets blamed too, but the federal list has no bulb condition, and we found no carmaker document that ties one to this lamp.

Why is my brake warning light flashing?

Because the carmaker chose to flash it: the rule allows the light to be steady or flashing and gives flashing no meaning of its own. Your manual says what it means on your car, and the ones we read give different answers:

• In sharp cornersJeep's 2015 Wrangler manual says it may flash for a moment in sharp corners, as the fluid moves in the reservoir. Have the fluid level checked.
• With the parking brake on and the car in gearThe same Wrangler manual says it flashes then, with a chime once the car moves. Release the parking brake fully.
• GM's parking brake lightOn GM's electric parking brake, a light that flashes after you release the brake, or while driving, means a fault in the parking brake. See a dealer.

Jeep's advice for a flicker in corners is to have the fluid level checked, so start there.

What does "check brake system" mean?

It's a text message on the driver display, not the lamp itself, and the wording depends on the carmaker. It can tell you more than the lamp does, because some messages name the part at fault.

GM's messages show the range:

• BRAKE FLUID LOWThe level is below the safe mark (2017 Malibu manual).
• SERVICE PARKING BRAKEA fault in the electric parking brake (2017 Malibu manual).
• SERVICE BRAKE ASSISTA fault in the system that adds force to your pedal (2017 Malibu manual).
• Service Brake SystemOn 2019 Silverado and Sierra 1500s, set by low voltage in GM's bulletin PIT5634.
• Brake System FailureOn 2019 Silverado and Sierra 1500s, software that could switch off brake assist, fixed under recall 20V055000.

Honda's 2018 Accord spells its messages out in full:

• With the red lightBrake Fluid Low. Do Not Drive. Check Fluid Level.
• With the amber BRAKE SYSTEM lightBrake System Problem. Brake Performance May Be Reduced. See Your Dealer.

Honda's amber light covers braking systems other than the regular brakes, such as the electric parking brake and brake hold.

Treat a message the way you'd treat the lamp: stop, check the fluid and the parking brake, and have the codes read.

What does the brake warning light look like?

It's red, and it reads BRAKE or shows an exclamation mark inside a circle, with a curved bracket on each side. Federal standard FMVSS 101 requires the brake system warning to be red.

A few look-alikes mean something else:

• ABS in a circle, yellowThe anti-lock system, not the regular brakes. See our ABS light guide.

Is there a recall for the brake warning light?

For some trucks and SUVs, yes. These are the recalls where the carmaker's report names the warning light:

NHTSA's records list every one of these recall repairs as free of charge. Run your VIN with a dealer, or through our free VIN checker, before paying for a master cylinder or hose yourself.

How much does it cost to fix the brake warning light?

The parts behind the light cost $3.39 to $278 at the counter, from a pad wear sensor to a master cylinder. The box prices them one car at a time, so you can find yours.

Labor isn't in the box, but the carmakers' own warranty times put a number on it. At $120 to $159 an hour, what almost half of shops charge in a 2025 survey:

• Inspect for a leak and top off, Nissan0.3 hours on 2007 to 2012 Altimas, $36 to $48 in labor.
• Inspect and replace the master cylinder, Nissan1.2 hours on the same Altimas, $144 to $191 in labor.
• Reprogram the brake module, Jeep0.2 hours on 2022 and 2023 Wagoneers, $24 to $32 in labor.

A shop's diagnosis time comes on top, and the recalls above cost nothing where they apply.

How do you fix or reset the brake warning light?

By fixing what turned it on, because the rule keeps it lit as long as the condition lasts. To fix the brake warning light, work through the 6 steps below, in order:

1. Release the parking brake fully. On an electric parking brake, use the switch the way your manual shows.
2. Check the fluid level on level ground. GM's manual says it should sit between the MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir.
3. Find out why it's low before adding any. GM says not to top it off, because adding fluid doesn't fix a leak. Hyundai says to add fluid and then look for a leak, and Nissan says not to drive below MIN until the system is checked. If you add any, use only the fluid type printed on the reservoir, from a sealed container, as the federal rule requires that label to say.
4. Look for a leak. Check each wheel, under the car, and behind the reservoir where the master cylinder meets the booster.
5. If the level is fine, get it scanned. Ask for the brake or ABS module codes, the grounds and a battery test before anyone replaces a part.
6. Run the VIN before paying. A recall may cover it, as on the Fords and GM trucks above.

There's no reset for the red lamp itself. It goes off when the cause is gone, and a light that comes back after it was cleared means the cause is still there.
