ABS Light On: What It Means and Is It Safe to Drive?

Federal law sets how an ABS light looks: a separate anti-lock warning has to be yellow, read ABS or Antilock, and stay lit while the fault lasts. That rule is federal brake standard FMVSS 135, and the rest of this page builds on it.

The light is less alarming than it looks, because it's about the part of the system that stops the wheels locking, not the part that stops the car. We read the federal rule, six carmakers' owner's manuals, the recalls and the service bulletins carmakers send their dealers, where the real causes are written down.

Then we priced the parts behind it, one car at a time, for eight cars, most of them the models drivers ask about most.

What does the ABS light mean?

It means the anti-lock braking system, or ABS, has found a fault and turned itself off. ABS stops the wheels locking in a hard stop, which GM's manual says helps you keep steering, and the light tells you that help is off right now.

The ABS light meaning doesn't change from one carmaker to the next, because federal standard FMVSS 135 sets out how it behaves. It covers cars built since 2000 and light trucks, SUVs and vans up to 7,716 pounds built since 2002:

• It checks itself at start-upThe rule requires a bulb check for every brake warning light, and GM's, Nissan's, Kia's and Hyundai's manuals run it when you start the car. Nissan's 2020 Altima manual says a light that then goes out means the ABS is working.
• It stays on while the fault lastsOnce lit, the rule says it must stay on for as long as the problem exists, whenever the ignition is on.
• It's yellow when it stands aloneA separate ABS light must be yellow and read ABS, Antilock or Anti-lock. A car may instead report the fault on its red BRAKE light, which is why some owners see a red warning for an ABS problem.
• Steady or flashing is up to the carmakerThe rule allows either, so a flashing one doesn't mean something different by law. Your owner's manual says what yours does.

Some drivers call it the anti-lock brake light or the ABS warning light. It's the same warning, and the code behind it is stored in the ABS module.

Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?

With the ABS light alone, yes, carefully, and get it checked soon: the regular brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop. GM's 2020 Equinox manual puts it plainly: the vehicle still has brakes, but not antilock brakes.

Nissan's 2020 Altima manual says the brakes then work normally but without anti-lock assistance, and Hyundai's 2023 Sonata manual says the hydraulic brakes still work. The federal test agrees: with the anti-lock system disconnected, a car still has to stop from 62 mph within 279 feet, where the normal test allows 230.

That gap is why you should leave more room and brake earlier until it's fixed, above all in rain, snow or ice. Stop as soon as it's safe if any of these shows with it:

• The red BRAKE lightGM and Hyundai treat the two together as a problem with the regular brakes. Toyota's manual says to stop immediately, because the car can become extremely unstable when braking.
• A soft or sinking brake pedalThat's the regular brakes, not the anti-lock system, and it needs a shop before the car is driven again.
• A hard pedal, a pull or an odd noiseHyundai's 2023 Sonata manual lists a hard-to-push pedal, pulling to one side and unusual sounds among the checks when you stop.

Why is my ABS light on?

Because the ABS module has lost a signal it trusts. The service bulletins carmakers send their dealers name these causes, and the code stored in the ABS module says which one:

1. A wheel speed sensor or its wiring

Each wheel has a sensor that reads how fast it turns, and the ABS module compares all four. When one signal drops out or reads wrong, the module can't tell whether a wheel is locking, so it switches ABS off and lights the lamp.

Ford found the sensor wiring rubbing on the front wheels of 2020 Escapes and fixed it with a repair kit (bulletin 20-2302). GM replaced both front sensors on 2016 Buick Envisions whose wires could break, in 1.7 hours of labor (service update 16039).

Ask the shop which wheel the code names before it replaces more than one sensor.

2. A dirty or damaged tone ring

The sensor reads a toothed or magnetic ring that turns with the wheel. Metal dust, debris or a bent ring gives it a false signal, even when the sensor is fine.

GM tells technicians to clean manufacturing debris off the ring on 2020 Silverado and Sierra heavy-duty trucks, without a magnet, in 1.1 hours (PIT5707), a job that takes the wheel hub off. Stellantis names metal flakes at the ring and on the sensor tip in two 2025 notes.

Ford says to check for that contamination before replacing parts (SSM 49433), so ask for it.

3. The ABS module or its software

The module is the computer, pump and valves that run the system. Software faults and failed units both turn it off.

Ford reprograms the ABS module on 2021 and 2022 F-150 hybrids and the 2022 F-150 Lightning (bulletin 25-2380). Ram's recall 24V653000 covers ABS module software that could switch off stability control on 2019 and 2021 to 2024 Ram 1500s.

Ask whether a software update exists for your car before anyone quotes a new module.

4. Low brake fluid

On cars and light trucks, the federal rule makes a low level a red BRAKE light condition, but some vehicles show the ABS light with it. FCA's bulletin for 2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks, too heavy for that rule, lists both lights together, from a weeping front brake hose next to the sensor wiring (05-005-17).

Low fluid points to worn pads or a leak, so look at the reservoir, and don't just top it off; our guide to brake fluid leaks shows where to look.

5. A brake light switch or relay

The ABS module also watches the switch that turns on your brake lights. Nissan fixes an ABS light on some 2022 and 2023 Frontiers with a new stop lamp switch, a relay and jumper harness, and a module reprogram (NTB22-084).

If your brake lights don't work, or stay on, mention it when the light is checked.

6. A chafed wiring harness

A harness that rubs through can short and blow a fuse. GM found one chafing on a floor-pan stud in some 2008 to 2012 Enclave, Acadia, Traverse and Outlook crossovers, with an ABS light, stability messages and even a no-start (PIT4946A).

There the blown fuse was a result, not the cause, so a new fuse that blows again points back at the wiring. We found no bulletin that makes a fuse on its own the root cause of the light.

Worn brake pads get blamed too, but the federal rule sends worn linings to the BRAKE or brake-wear warning, and we found no bulletin tying pads to the ABS light. A wrong-size spare or mismatched tires can confuse the sensors too: recalls 21V985, 22V509 and 25V745 say a wrong spare can affect how ABS works.

Why are the ABS and traction control lights on together?

Because both systems use the same wheel speed sensors and the same brakes, so one fault takes out both. Traction control stops a wheel from spinning, and stability control stops the car from sliding.

Federal standard FMVSS 126 says stability control works by braking each wheel on its own, with the brakes the ABS also controls. Every car and light truck up to 10,000 pounds built since September 1, 2011 has to have it.

How the traction light behaves tells you what's going on. GM's 2020 Equinox manual says a flashing one means the system is working, and a steady one means it's off or not working:

• Traction light flashingThe system is working, not broken. It flashes while it stops a wheel from spinning or catches a slide.
• Traction light on and steadyTraction or stability control is switched off or not working. Check first that nobody turned it off with the button or the menu.
• ABS light on as wellThen look for one fault in something both use, as in the GM recall below. Treat the two lights as one repair until a scan says otherwise.

GM's recall 19V761000 shows the last case, on 2014 to 2018 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500s and 2015 to 2020 Tahoes, Suburbans and Yukons. One failed wheel speed sensor lights the ABS and stability warnings together, with a Service StabiliTrak message.

Tires can do it too, because the module compares how fast each wheel turns. A smaller spare or one odd tire spins faster than the others, and GM's manual warns that different-size tires can affect the anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control.

Hyundai's 2023 Sonata manual says the same about stability control and asks for all four tires and wheels to match. If the lights came on after a flat or new tires, check the sizes on the sidewalls before paying for a sensor.

Why are the ABS and brake lights on together?

Because the fault may reach the regular brakes, not just the anti-lock system. The red BRAKE light covers low fluid, the parking brake and a loss of pressure in part of the brake system.

GM's manual says the two lights together mean no anti-lock plus a problem with the regular brakes.

Hyundai's Sonata manual calls the pair its Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) warning, for the system that spreads braking force between the wheels. It says that with both lights on, the brakes won't work normally and sudden braking can turn dangerous.

Honda's 2018 CR-V and Accord manuals say the pair means the electronic brake distribution system isn't working, which can make the car unstable under sudden braking.

Toyota's Avalon manual says to stop immediately, because the car can become extremely unstable under braking. Here's what to check, in order:

• The parking brakeMake sure it is fully released, since a parking brake that isn't fully off keeps the red light on.
• The fluid levelLook at the reservoir under the hood. Below the MIN line points to worn pads or a leak, and topping it off hides the reason.
• Both lights still onHave the car towed rather than driven. If you must move it, Hyundai says to avoid high speed and sudden braking.

On some cars the red light is the only warning an ABS fault gets. The rule lets a carmaker put the ABS failure on one shared red lamp that reads BRAKE, so a red light alone doesn't rule out the anti-lock system.

Why does the ABS light come on and go off?

Because the fault comes and goes: the module loses a signal, then gets it back. The rule keeps the light on as long as the problem exists, so a light that goes off means the module stopped seeing it, not that it was fixed.

Here's what can make the light come and go, from the documents we read:

• A damaged wireGM's bulletin on the chafed harness above and Stellantis' sensor notes both describe faults that come and go. Ask for the wiring at that wheel to be checked.
• Hard braking on iceKia's 2020 Soul manual says continuous braking on an icy road can light the ABS light. Pull over and restart, and if it goes off, the ABS is fine.
• Several lights coming on at randomJeep's recall 13V483000 on the 2014 Grand Cherokee traced random warning lights, and lost ABS and stability control, to a computer communication fault and loose alternator ground wires. We found no bulletin that blames a weak battery alone.

GM's Equinox manual says to stop, turn the engine off and restart, and to see a dealer if the light stays on while driving above 13 mph. If you can, get the ABS module scanned while the light is on, when the module is seeing the fault.

Is there a recall for the ABS light?

For some cars, yes, and two of them work the other way round: the ABS fails and the light doesn't come on. Here are the recalls where the carmaker's report names the warning light:

Other recalls fix the ABS unit without naming a light:

• Kia, recall 23V652000A new fuse for a module that could short.
• Ram, recall 24V896000A new brake hydraulic unit, the ABS valve block, or a new motor for it, on 2017 and 2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks.

Will an ABS light fail inspection?

In three states, yes: Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island reject a car whose anti-lock warning stays on. The other states we read either pass it, fail it only with another fault, or don't check it at all.

Here's what each state's own inspection rule says, for the 13 states we could read at source:

Texas ended safety inspections for non-commercial cars on January 1, 2025, and New Jersey tests passenger cars for emissions only. An emissions test reads the check engine light and its codes, not the anti-lock warning, under federal rule 40 CFR 85.2207.

The red BRAKE light is a different story. Virginia, Vermont and Massachusetts pass the anti-lock warning but reject a red brake warning that stays on, so fix that one before the inspection.

How much does it cost to fix the ABS light?

The parts behind the light cost $6.51 to $2,019 at the counter, from a rear sensor to a whole module. The box prices them one car at a time, so you can find yours.

Labor isn't in the box, but the carmakers' own warranty times put a number on three jobs. At $120 to $159 an hour, what almost half of shops charge in a 2025 survey:

• Both front sensors, GM1.7 hours on the 2016 Buick Envision, $204 to $270 in labor.
• Cleaning the tone rings, GM1.1 hours on 2020 Silverado and Sierra heavy-duty trucks, $132 to $175 in labor.
• Reprogramming the module, FordUp to 0.7 hours on the F-150 hybrid and Lightning, $111 at most in labor.

A shop's diagnosis time comes on top, and the scan that reads the ABS module is where it starts.

How do you fix or reset the ABS light?

By fixing the fault, because the rule keeps the light on as long as the problem exists. To fix it for good, work through the 4 steps below, in order:

1. Note which lights are on. ABS alone, with traction or stability, or with the red BRAKE light: the answer changes how far you should drive.
2. Check the brake fluid and the parking brake. A low reservoir or a parking brake that isn't fully off lights the red BRAKE warning, and a low level points to worn pads or a leak.
3. Get the ABS module scanned. The codes are stored in the ABS module, so ask for a scan that reads it and says which wheel or circuit failed. The OBD-II rules are written around emissions systems, so a basic engine-code reader may not see them.
4. Run the VIN before paying. A recall or software update may cover it, as on the Ram 1500 and GM trucks above.

Restarting can clear a light for a while, and GM's manual uses a restart as its first check. If it comes back, the fault is still there, and clearing the code with a scan tool only switches the light off until the module sees the fault again.

Can I drive with the ABS light on?

With the ABS light alone, yes, carefully: GM, Nissan and Hyundai say the regular brakes still work, without anti-lock. With the red BRAKE light too, stop and have it checked, because the regular brakes may be affected.

What is the most common cause of the ABS light?

No count we could run ranks the causes, so we won't name one as most common. The bulletins we read point at wheel speed sensors and their wiring, the rings they read, and the ABS module and its software.

Can low brake fluid cause the ABS light?

It can show with it. Low fluid is a red BRAKE light condition under the federal rule for cars, but FCA's bulletin for 2017 Ram heavy-duty trucks lists the low-fluid and ABS warnings together.

Is it expensive to fix an ABS light?

It depends on the part. A wheel speed sensor is the cheap end and the ABS module the expensive one. The price box above gives the sensors for each car we priced, and the module where one is listed.

Will an ABS light fail inspection?

In Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, yes. New York, Massachusetts, West Virginia, Hawaii and Missouri say it isn't a reason to fail, and Pennsylvania and Virginia fail it only in narrow cases.

Can I fix the ABS light myself?

You can check the brake fluid, the parking brake and whether the light clears on a restart. Finding the failed sensor takes a scan of the ABS module, which is where the code is stored.
