Each year scores 1 to 5 against other Corolla years only, never against another car. The score uses complaints, serious complaints, recalls and open NHTSA probes from the year’s first five years. A do-not-drive recall means 1, years under five years old get no score, and Best starts at 2011. Complaints are not failure rates.

2003 and 2004 Corollas and Corolla Matrixes: Takata air bag recall

Toyota tells owners of 2003 and 2004 Corollas and Corolla Matrixes not to drive them until the free Takata recall repair is done, and to call their dealer instead of driving there. Dealers may provide one of several free options, such as mobile repair at the car, towing to the dealership, vehicle pickup and delivery, or another way to get around. Ask your dealer which one.

Toyota Corolla crash tests and investigations

NHTSA gives the Toyota Corolla an overall 5 of 5 for the 2014–2025 model years, an overall 4 of 5 for the 2012–2013 model years and an overall 3 of 5 for the 2011 model year. The frontal score is 5 for the 2014–2016 and 2020–2025, 4 for the 2011–2013 and 2017–2018, and 4 or 5 depending on the version for the 2019.

NHTSA started its current 5-star test system with the 2011 model year, so older ratings are not comparable and we do not show them. Separately, NHTSA’s defect office has had 7 probes on Corolla model years, and two of them are still open. NHTSA also handled petitions about frontal air bag non-deployment (DP11001, closed Aug 19, 2011) and low-speed surging (DP14003, closed Apr 29, 2015).

Toyota Corolla model years compared

Each score from 1 to 5 compares one Toyota Corolla model year with the other Toyota Corolla model years only. It is not a reliability rating, and it says nothing about how the Toyota Corolla compares with another car. A 5 means that year scores highest among the Toyota Corolla model years, a 1 means it scores lowest. The 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 are too new to judge and carry no score.

Best counts model years from 2011 on, so an older year can score 5 here and still not be listed in the Best years.

How the score is built: each year is compared with the typical Toyota Corolla year over its first five years on the road, using complaints (40%), serious complaints that report a crash, fire, injury or death (40%), recalls (15%) and open NHTSA probes (5%). A 4 is better than most other years and sits in a Next best tier under the Best years when fewer than five years from 2011 on score 5. A year with a recall that tells owners not to drive it scores 1.

Years under five years old get no score. Source: NHTSA owner complaints, federal file of Aug 25, 2026, and NHTSA recall campaigns, read Oct 31, 2026. The open probes come from the NHTSA defect investigations file of Oct 30, 2026. The counts in the “Model years compared” table are for those first five years. The complaint and recall totals on each year card cover all years on file, so they are larger.

Toyota Corolla recalls by year

The 2010 Toyota Corolla leads with 17 recall campaigns, most often for the airbag system, and the 2003, 2004 and 2009 follow with 13 each. Every other year has 0–10, most often for the airbag system (14 of the 20 other years with a recall).

By federal law a carmaker must repair a recalled car for free unless it was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the maker sent the recall notice or NHTSA ordered the recall, whichever came first. Many makers fix older cars anyway, so ask a Toyota dealer with your VIN. Your VIN shows which campaigns are still open on a car.

2012 Corolla: brake system warning light

If the brake system warning light comes on, stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place and contact a Toyota dealer. Continuing to drive may be dangerous (page 420). Do not pump the brake pedal if the engine stalls, because each push on the pedal uses up the reserve for the power-assisted brakes (page 128).

VIN lookup

Recalls over 15 years old do not show

NHTSA’s lookup leaves them out, except where the maker offers more coverage, so ask a dealer about any older car.

Look up your own car by VIN before anything else on this page.

Ask a Toyota dealer to check your VIN for open recalls. Enter the 17-character VIN to see which campaigns are still open on one car. The lookup leaves out recalls older than 15 years.

Toyota Corolla complaints by generation

The Corolla changed generation in 2003, 2009, 2014 and 2020, so the model years fall into five groups. The ninth generation, 2003–2008, drew the most complaints at 4,038, and the tenth generation, 2009–2013, follows with 3,933, led by the 2009. Counts are raw NHTSA complaints, not adjusted for how many cars were sold or how often owners filed in each era.

NHTSA files the Corolla Hatchback, Corolla Cross, Corolla IM, Corolla Matrix and Corolla Hybrid under their own names, so they are not counted here.

Toyota Corolla complaints by year

The table lists every Corolla model year in NHTSA’s file, 2000–2025, with its complaint count and the system owners named most. The 2009 leads with 1,459 complaints, most about the airbag system, and the 2010 follows with 1,244, most about the airbag system.

The verdict for each year uses the same scores as the cards at the top of the page. This table counts every complaint on file for each year, while the Model years compared table scores each year on its first five years only.

Which Toyota Corolla years have the most recalls?

The 2010 Toyota Corolla leads with 17 recall campaigns, most often for the airbag system, and the 2003, 2004 and 2009 follow with 13 each. Does the Toyota Corolla have a coolant flow shut-off valve problem?

Toyota extended the coolant flow shut-off valve warranty on the 2020–2021 Corolla to 10 years from the date of first use or 100,000 miles. Toyota covered the valve until November 30, 2025 regardless of mileage, and the second phase runs 10 years or 100,000 miles from first use.

Which Toyota Corolla years had an oil consumption program?

A Toyota warranty enhancement covered excessive oil consumption on 2009–2011 Corollas with the 2AZ-FE engine for 10 years or 150,000 miles from first use. The program has ended, and the document names that engine, so other Corolla years are not on it.
