A shop says your fuel pump has failed, and the price depends on which of two pumps it means. The in-tank pump alone costs $43 to $260, part only, on the cars we priced.
Carmakers allow 0.7 to 2.4 hours to fit it, or $84 to $382, labor only, at $120 to $159 an hour. This page gives part prices for both pumps on 32 cars, the hours by car, and the recall and warranty check that can make the repair free.
How much does a fuel pump replacement cost?
A fuel pump replacement on a 2019 Toyota Camry costs $152 to $179, parts and labor, and $381 to $440 on a 2019 Tundra. Those are the four Toyotas where we have both halves of the bill: the pump's price and Toyota's dealer hours for that pump.

Almost half of US shops charge $120 to $159 an hour, and that rate times the carmaker's hours is the labor half of a fair quote. A shop may bill the pump above the catalog price, so ask for the part's brand and the hours in writing.
What does a fuel pump cost on my car?
A gas car carries an electric fuel pump inside the tank, sold alone or as a module with the fuel level sender. A car with direct injection, which sprays fuel straight into the cylinders, adds a high-pressure pump on the engine.

How many hours does a fuel pump replacement take?
Carmakers allow their dealers 0.7 to 2.4 hours for an in-tank pump and 0.7 to 4.6 hours for a high-pressure pump. The time depends more on the car than on the pump type.

Some carmaker times cover more than the pump: Kia and General Motors add a new fuel pipe, and the E85 times include a fuel sample test. The Toyota rows are cars in Toyota's 15-year pump program.
Toyota allows 0.7 hours on a Camry and 2.4 on a 4Runner for the same pump job. On a 2019 Honda Pilot, Honda's recall reaches the pump through an access panel under the second-row seat and allows 1.3 hours, or $156 to $207, labor only.
The pump under the rear seat
Honda's dealers reach the Pilot's pump through that panel and fit a new tank O-ring and locknut within those 1.3 hours. So ask whether your car has a panel like this when you ask for the quote.
Ask the shop which time its quote uses and how it reaches the pump. Compare both with the carmaker's figure above.
Why is fuel pump replacement so expensive?
A fuel pump bill climbs because of four things, and each one shows up as a line on the estimate:
- Pump or module. A shop may fit the whole in-tank module where the pump alone would do. On a 2019 Camry the module costs $123 to $187 against $68 for the pump, both part only, and Toyota's own program fits the pump. A quote far above these figures may list the carmaker's module at dealer price, so ask which part it names.
- The brand. The carmaker's own part isn't necessarily the most expensive. On a 2021 Grand Cherokee the Mopar module is $163, between $99 and $180 for other brands, part only.
- One-time parts. Some high-pressure pump jobs need new parts that can't be reused. Subaru's bulletin lists a new fuel delivery pipe and intake manifold gasket, and Kia's and GM's include a new fuel pipe. On an in-tank job, Honda's 2019 Pilot recall fits a new tank O-ring, which can't be reused, and a new locknut.
- The hours. A quote with more hours than the carmaker's time deserves a question. Ask which labor guide the shop used, and compare it with the table above.
A written estimate puts each of these on its own line: the part and its brand, any extra parts, and the hours times the shop's rate. Our guide on how to read a repair estimate shows where each line sits, so ask for any that are missing before you say yes.
Is it the fuel pump?
A stall, a long crank or lost power can also come from a relay, a fuse or a pressure regulator. Ask the shop for these three checks before it orders a pump, each one a step carmakers give their own technicians:
- The fuse and relay. A failed fuse or relay leaves a good pump without power. Nissan's bulletin NTB21-009 has technicians check the fuse first on some 2019–2021 Altima, Kicks and Versa models.
- The plug at the pump. Chrysler's tech tip 9100833 has technicians check the connector at the pump first on 2020–2027 Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler models. A pump that runs needs no replacing.
- A fuel pressure test. A gauge on the fuel line shows whether the pump or a regulator is at fault. Chrysler's bulletin 14-004-25 Rev. B ends in a new regulator, not a pump module, on 2021–2025 Durango and 2021–2022 Grand Cherokee models with a long crank. Ask for the measured pressure in writing before you pay for a pump.
Our bad fuel pump symptoms page lists the signs and the rest of the tests to ask for before a new pump goes in. It also says when a failing pump makes the car unsafe to drive.
From the carmakers
Is your fuel pump covered by a recall or warranty?
Check before you pay, because a recalled pump is replaced free at the dealer, the lowest fuel pump price on this page, and some carmakers stretched their pump warranty to 15 years. Enter your VIN on the recall lookup of NHTSA, the federal safety agency, since a recall can cover some cars of a model year and not others.
Here are the recalls and warranty programs that pay for a new pump, so a fuel pump replacement may cost you nothing:
Recall 25V-455
The low-pressure fuel pump may fail, which can result in an engine stall while driving.
Recall 23V-858
Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Recall 21V-875
The impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump may crack and deform, potentially causing the fuel pump to fail.
Recall 21V-587
The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
Recall 20V-682
If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Warranty extension WTY034
The fuel control valve (FCV) plunger in the vehicle’s high-pressure fuel pump may wear unevenly, and, over time, become stuck in the open position.
Warranty extension Denso fuel pump
Labor and part cost for the related repair will be covered under this extension.
Bulletin FUE064
If the inspection paper remains dry and no visible fuel leak is present (OK), then no further action is required.
Customer support program 23TE05
This coverage will be applicable for 15 years from the date of first use, regardless of mileage.
Warranty extension AWA-22-05
The warranty, as extended, is fully transferable to subsequent owners.
Conclusion
Check for a free fix, then compare the price
A fuel pump quote is easier to judge with the pump type, the price and the hours in hand. Here's what to check before you pay, from the documents and prices on this page:
- Run your VIN. A recall or a warranty program of up to 15 years covers many pumps, and a covered repair costs you nothing.
- Ask which pump failed. On a 2019 Camry the high-pressure pump is $958, part only, against $123 to $187 for the in-tank module.
- Ask for the pump or the module. The pump alone can be the cheaper part, and Toyota's own program fits just the pump.
- Compare the hours. Carmakers allow their dealers 0.7 to 2.4 hours for an in-tank pump.
Common questions
Asked most often
Is it worth replacing a fuel pump?
Yes, when the car is worth more than the bill and needs nothing bigger. Check for a recall or a 15-year warranty first, because either can make the repair free.
Can I drive with a failing fuel pump?
Only while it runs smoothly. A failing pump can stall the engine while driving and may not restart, so stop driving once it cuts out.
How long does a high-pressure fuel pump last?
No carmaker publishes a lifespan for it. Kia stretched its warranty on some 3.3-liter V6 high-pressure pumps to 15 years or 180,000 miles, after finding a part inside could wear unevenly.
Can you replace a fuel pump yourself?
Carmakers write the job for trained technicians, since it means open gasoline lines and, on direct injection, high fuel pressure. If you do it, follow your carmaker's procedure, including any one-time parts it lists.

How this was compiled
Part prices are the brands a large online parts catalog lists for each car, read in October 2026. Hours are each carmaker's own labor time in a bulletin or program filed with NHTSA, and labor is priced at the shop rate in the survey above.
A listing counts as one pump type only when its own text or part number says which pump it is. A $671 Ford pump, part only, listed for the 2016 Explorer carries the same part number as a high-pressure pump on that page, so it stays out of the in-tank range.
What we didn't do
We didn't find a carmaker time for every car in the price table, so only four 2019 Toyotas (Camry, Corolla, Tacoma and Tundra) get a parts and labor figure. We didn't price the one-time pipes and gaskets some high-pressure pump jobs need, or read every carmaker's service manual.
Prices are for the US market and were read in October 2026. Prices from $10 up are rounded to the nearest dollar, so $14.13 reads as $14 and $14.52 as $15. Below $10 they're exact. This article is general information, not advice about your specific vehicle. See the disclaimer.
