Short answer

The steering leads the 2018 Jeep Wrangler record at 62%, with suspension next at 19%. Of the steering reports that give a mileage, half came before 5,000 miles. The costliest part on our cost list is the tie rod end, $12 to $228 for the part alone.

It's a count of reports, not a failure rate. Use it to decide what to inspect before buying, not to grade the car.

What we know beyond the file

More than six in ten complaints name the steering, many of them a shudder in the steering wheel, and suspension complaints describe the same shake. Jeep replaces the steering damper under customer satisfaction notice V41 and warranty extension bulletin 19-002-24, not a safety recall, and NHTSA's investigation PE19-012 traced the shimmy to that damper.

2018 Jeep Wrangler overview

The 2018 Wrangler was sold in two generations: the outgoing JK with a 3.6-liter V6, and the new JL with the 3.6-liter V6 or a 2.0-liter turbo four, with manual or automatic gearboxes and four-wheel drive.

Owners filed 6 times as many complaints about the 2018 as the 2017 (308), and the steering leads only in 2018. The 2019 drew 732, with steering named most.

Is the 2018 Jeep Wrangler reliable?

Owners filed more complaints about the 2018 Jeep Wrangler than about any other Wrangler year, and most of them are about the steering. The four checks below are what the federal record can say; none of them is a reliability score.

When driving at speeds over 50+ mph and hitting a bump in the road, the steering wheel will shake violently until speed is reduced to below 40 mph. The dealer has serviced it twice trying to add a dampener however this does not fix the problem. Dealer now says the problem most likely can't be fixed.

My car is shaking non stop after I hit a bump on the road, it can last up to 1 1/2minute non stop. Took into the dealer and was told after 1 wk that there was nothing wrong with it. I have under 5,000 miles on my car.

Jeep wrangler shakes uncontrollably after hitting a bump at highway speeds. Need to slow down precipitously to get it to stop shaking. For instance have to slow from 65-70 to 35. Usually does it 2-3 times every time I'm on 4 lane highway. Had local mechanic look into it. Have not had it to dealer yet.

I was driving down a residential road going about 20mph, the vehicle started smoking so I pulled over and got out to find smoke coming from the fuse box/ battery area. It I could smell burnt electrical wiring. Within seconds of pulling over the smoke turned into a flame and before I could to get anything out of the jeep the whole inside was full of smoke and the flame was spreading fast.

Battery ground cable sparks when removed no matter how long you wait. Battery charge decreased to 60 % charge before disconnected. Vehicle is stationary in my garage. Vehicle has fifteen relays under hood many of which are always in on state. Am installing 180 amp relay to isolate battery. This vehicle is hazard to firemen. Most relays draw 1.4 amps in on state.

Steering wonders and is unresponsive at highway speeds requiring constant correction. This problem has nothing to do with the damper or track bar, as I have had these replaced, yet the problem persists (9/29/2019). I also, had the bcm body control module fail (7/11/2019) while in motion which caused the steering to lockup and the jeep not respond (thankfully this was a low speed incident).

When I first turn on the heater on cold morning, a maple syrup smell like antifreeze comes out of the dash vents. My coolant overflow tank looses about 1/4" coolant in 2000 miles. I believe there is a pin hole leak in the heater core. The dealer did a pressure test, but the leak must be too small to detect. The smell is nauseating and I understand antifreeze vapor is toxic..

Before you buy a used 2018 Jeep Wrangler

These checks follow what 2018 Wrangler owners reported most: a shake in the steering wheel after bumps, then suspension and electrical faults. Run the VIN before you pay, because this Jeep has a steering shaft recall.

Before you buy a 2018 Jeep Wrangler5 checks to do in person
  1. 1
Drive over rough pavement at highway speed

A shake in the steering wheel is the top complaint by a wide margin.

  2. 2
Ask whether the steering damper was replaced

Jeep's notice V41 covers the damper; dealer records show the work.

  3. 3
Run the VIN for the steering shaft recall

A recall covers the intermediate steering shaft weld on some 2018 Wranglers.

  4. 4
    Drive through every gear

Rough shifting shows up in the powertrain complaints.

  5. 5
    Watch the dash

Warning lights lead the electrical complaints.

Oil and service for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler

This is what Jeep's manual says the 2018 Wrangler (JL) needs: which oil to use and how much, the fluids for the transmission and the cooling system, and when each job is due. The vehicle tracks oil wear itself and shows an oil change message, but Jeep says never to go past a set number of miles or months.
