Short answer

The powertrain leads the 2012 Ford Focus record at 37%, with steering next at 25%. Of the powertrain reports that give a mileage, half came before 55,000 miles. The costliest part on our cost list is the dual clutch assembly, $659 to $1,320 for the part alone.

It's a count of reports, not a failure rate. Use it to decide what to inspect before buying, not to grade the car.

What we know beyond the file

The automatic in the 2012 Focus is a dual-clutch gearbox, which EPA lists as an automated manual. Most powertrain complaints describe it: shudder, jerks and rattles when pulling away.

Is the 2012 Ford Focus reliable?

Owners filed more complaints about the 2012 Ford Focus than about any other Focus year, and the powertrain draws the largest share. The four checks below are what the federal record can say; none of them is a reliability score.

Jerking and hesitation on acceleration, surging, drifting , grinding noises, rattling noise, contacted selling dealer and they reset the computer 2 times, and another Ford dealer reset it once. Each time it seemed to work better for less than 20 miles.

Transmission shutters, jumps, makes rattling noise. Dealer reprogrammed it in oct. 2013. Did better for a while. Now it is worse, and makes a rattling noise upon acceleration. Took in on march 15th, and was told there is nothing they can do. They said it is normal. It performed ok the first year. Now it is getting worse.

My car would not go into the correct gear when I slowed down to turn a corner. Coming out of the turn it stalled into neutral . My car has a rattle and jerking when I'm going less than 5 mph sometimes. This car does not change gears smoothly! I recently rented a 2013 focus and it drives great. My 2012 Ford focus is horrible.

GAOwner in Georgia146,777 mi
The power steering just quits working and the steering wheel locks up while drive. We had to park the vehicle because it just isn't safe to drive, we are either going to get into a head on collision or drive off the road if we drive it like this. There is no check engine light, and Ford won't fix it since it is past warranty, we only have 45,000 mile on this car, it should be safer than this.
CAOwner in California46,000 mi
My steering locked up and I was unable to turn my wheel when driving. The alert "steer assist failure" appeared on dash. I had my car towed into the Ford dealership and I needed to replace my power steering which costs $2000. They implied that it would be unsafe to drive on the road as no power steering very well would result in an accident.

Before you buy a used 2012 Ford Focus

These checks follow what 2012 Focus owners reported most: an automatic that shudders and jerks, then steering failures. Ask for the service history by VIN, because it shows transmission work and whether the recall repairs were done.

Before you buy a 2012 Ford Focus5 checks to do in person
  1. 1
Pull away from a stop several times

Shudder and jerks from the automatic lead the complaints.

  2. 2
Ask for the transmission repair record

Dealers replaced clutches and modules on many of these cars; the VIN history shows it.

  3. 3
Turn the wheel lock to lock

Steering complaints describe the assist failing.

  4. 4
    Open and close every door

Door latches that fail are a common body complaint.

  5. 5
Run the VIN for open recalls

Only the VIN says if this car got the recall repairs.

Oil and service for the 2012 Ford Focus

This is what Ford's manual says the 2012 Focus needs: which oil to use and how much, the fluids for the transmission and the cooling system, and when each job is due. The car tracks oil wear itself and shows an oil change message on the dashboard, but Ford says never to go past a year or 10,000 miles.
