Short answer

The powertrain leads the 2013 Ford Focus record at 50%, with engine next at 16%. Of the powertrain reports that give a mileage, half came before 39,000 miles. The costliest part on our cost list is the canister purge valve, $25 to $45 for the part alone.

It's a count of reports, not a failure rate. Use it to decide what to inspect before buying, not to grade the car.

What we know beyond the file

Half of the complaints name the powertrain, most of them rough shifts and a shudder from the automatic. Engine and electrical complaints describe stalling, and Ford recalled the 2.0L Focus for a canister purge valve that can stall the engine.

2013 Ford focus transmission problems include noise, grinding, shuddering, lurching. Dealer claims they are normal but represents safety and financial issue (I'll never be able to sell the car) and I don't want it anymore. This is a dangerous vehicle.

Transmission was slipping in and out of first and second gear. Car was jerking back and forth at low speeds. Took to the dealer and noticed seals were leaking. We also own a 2014 focus and have the same problems with that transmission.

This vehicle has been into Ford service for a continuous oil leak from the transmission 4 times, 8/5/13, 8/25/14, 1/13/15, and 4/15/15. The transmission oil is leaking onto the clutches causing violent shuttering when the vehicle is shifting.

Vehicle shudders, bucks & hesitates upon take off and acceleration. Feels like its going to stall. Makes grinding noise when changing gears. Have had it "repaired" twice at the Ford dealership where purchased for same issue. First time on 9/8/2014 & 2nd time on 5/4/2015.

My 2013 Ford focus shudders, hesitates and surges when shifting. Today it is in Ford's dealership getting the fifth auto trans dual clutch installed. I do not feel safe when accelerating from a stop sign. Yesterday the car shifted hard 1-2 and again shifted hard 2-3 and then would not come out of 3rd gear.
MIOwner in Michigan86,000 mi
My 2013 Ford focus stalled out in the middle of an intersection and would not start due to a faulty tcm. We do not make right-hand turns on red because the vehicle does accelerate properly and shimmers and shakes when accelerating. We have advised Ford of this issue and was advised this is normal performance for this car.

While aggressively shifting from 1-2 and even sometimes 2-3 there is a hard thumping bang that occurs when shifting over 3k...multiple Ford owners are aware of the issue and state that the problem depends on the build date of the vehicle...supposedly stating its the engine motor mount. Upon reading into the problem Ford isn't sure if the are going to make it a recall or not.

When driving on residential roads, I often feel my 2013 Ford focus stall or jerk. Often times there are glitches in the electrical wiring of locks and also in the radio. The door will stay locked after hitting the unlock button on the inside multiple times. The radio will not turn on, unless I turn off and re-turn on the car. As for the stalling, it often stalls when going anywhere from 30-65 mph.

The power steering stopped working while driving on a rural highway at 50 mph and the steering became very stiff and difficult to maneuver the car. When I tried to drive the car to the dealership the next day the steering completely locked up and needed to be towed. The odometer was only at 31,870, but out of warranty. The repair bill was $2500 and took 10 days to fix.

My steering wheel locked up while I was driving on a main road with me and my 7 year old in the car. I was guided to the side by the police and had to have vehicle towed to dealer. The dealer informed me that the rack and pinion has failed and I will have to pay $1800 for repairs. After researching, ive found that this is a common problem with this vehicle.
