Each year scores 1 to 5 against other Rogue years only, never against another car. The score uses complaints, serious complaints, recalls and open NHTSA probes from the year’s first five years. A do-not-drive recall means 1, years under five years old get no score, and Best starts at 2011. Complaints are not failure rates.

Nissan Rogue crash tests and investigations

NHTSA gives the Nissan Rogue an overall 5 of 5 for the 2023–2025 model years, an overall 4 of 5 for the 2011–2021 model years and an overall 4 or 5 of 5 depending on the version for the 2022 model year. The frontal score is 4 for the 2011–2013, 2015–2020 and 2022–2025, 3 for the 2014, and 3 or 4 depending on the version for the 2021.

NHTSA started its current 5-star test system with the 2011 model year, so older ratings are not comparable and we do not show them. Separately, NHTSA’s defect office has had 5 probes on Rogue model years, and two of them are still open. NHTSA also handled a petition about false automatic emergency braking (DP19001), closed Sep 16, 2019.

Nissan Rogue model years compared

Each score from 1 to 5 compares one Nissan Rogue model year with the other Nissan Rogue model years only. It is not a reliability rating, and it says nothing about how the Nissan Rogue compares with another car. A 5 means that year scores highest among the Nissan Rogue model years, a 1 means it scores lowest. The 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 are too new to judge and carry no score.

Best counts model years from 2011 on, so an older year can score 5 here and still not be listed in the Best years.

How the score is built: each year is compared with the typical Nissan Rogue year over its first five years on the road, using complaints (40%), serious complaints that report a crash, fire, injury or death (40%), recalls (15%) and open NHTSA probes (5%). A 4 is better than most other years and sits in a Next best tier under the Best years when fewer than five years from 2011 on score 5. A year with a recall that tells owners not to drive it scores 1.

Years under five years old get no score. Source: NHTSA owner complaints, federal file of Aug 25, 2026, and NHTSA recall campaigns, read Oct 31, 2026. The open probes come from the NHTSA defect investigations file of Oct 30, 2026. The counts in the “Model years compared” table are for those first five years. The complaint and recall totals on each year card cover all years on file, so they are larger.

Nissan Rogue recalls by year

The 2014 and 2021 Nissan Rogue tie with 10 recall campaigns each, the 2014 most often for the electrical system and the 2021 equally often for the backup camera, the fuel system and hydraulic braking, and the 2015 and 2016 follow with 9 and 7. Every other year has 1–6, most often for the electrical system (10 of the 14 other years with a recall).

By federal law a carmaker must repair a recalled car for free unless it was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the maker sent the recall notice or NHTSA ordered the recall, whichever came first. Many makers fix older cars anyway, so ask a Nissan dealer with your VIN. Your VIN shows which campaigns are still open on a car.

Recall 25V-437

About 444,000 vehicles, among them 2021–2024 Rogue with the 1.5L VC-Turbo engine: engine failure

Recall 26V-080

About 324,000 certain 2023–2025 Rogue with the 1.5L VC-Turbo engine. It expands recall 25V-437.

Heat can break down the engine oil, and the engine bearings can seize, which can lead to engine failure. Dealers reprogram the engine computer, check for trouble codes, test drive the car and replace the engine if needed, for free.

Owner’s manual

2014 Rogue: low brake fluid warning light

If the low brake fluid warning light comes on while the engine is running with the parking brake not applied, stop the vehicle and check the brake fluid level. If the level is below the MINIMUM or MIN mark on the reservoir, do not drive until the brake system has been checked. Driving with the light on could be dangerous, so have the vehicle towed unless you judge it safe to drive carefully to the nearest service station (page 2-10).

VIN lookup

Recalls over 15 years old do not show

NHTSA’s lookup leaves them out, except where the maker offers more coverage, so ask a dealer about any older car.

Nissan Rogue complaints by generation

The Rogue changed generation in 2014 and 2021, so the model years fall into three groups. Nissan called the 2014 and 2021 Rogue all-new. The second generation, 2014–2020, drew the most complaints at 3,265, and the first generation, 2008–2013, follows with 2,318, led by the 2013. Each model year below is colored by its verdict, so you can see which years pull a generation’s total up.

Counts are raw NHTSA complaints, not adjusted for how many cars were sold or how often owners filed in each era.

For 2014 and 2015 Nissan also sold the older Rogue body as the Rogue Select, and NHTSA’s file has no separate name for it, so the 2014 and 2015 counts may include it. The Rogue Sport has its own entry and is not counted here.

Nissan Rogue complaints by year

The table lists every Rogue model year in NHTSA’s file, 2008–2025, with its complaint count and the system owners named most. The 2023 leads with 687 complaints, most about the engine, and the 2018 follows with 666, most about the braking system. The verdict for each year uses the same scores as the cards at the top of the page. Questions people ask

What are the Nissan Rogue years to avoid?

Avoid the 2018 and 2017 Nissan Rogue, the years that score worst against the other Rogue model years, and check the 2019, 2021 and 2015 before you buy, the three of the five years to check with the weakest numbers. Counting every complaint filed so far, the 2018 complaints most often name the braking system, and the 2017 complaints name the powertrain.

What is the most common problem with the Nissan Rogue?

The powertrain, named in 1,815 owner complaints across the 2008–2025 Rogue and the top system in 9 of the 18 model years. The engine follows with 1,131, then the electrical system with 944.

Which Nissan Rogue years have the most recalls?

The 2014 and 2021 Nissan Rogue tie with 10 recall campaigns each, the 2014 most often for the electrical system and the 2021 equally often for the backup camera, the fuel system and hydraulic braking, and the 2015 and 2016 follow with 9 and 7. By federal law a carmaker must repair a recalled car for free unless it was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the maker sent the recall notice or NHTSA ordered the recall, whichever came first.

Does the Nissan Rogue have an evaporative emission vent tube problem?

Nissan extended the evaporative emission vapor vent tube warranty on the 2008–2016 Rogue to 15 years from the original sale or 150,000 miles. Nissan covers the tube only if it is found completely blocked.

Is there a recall for the Nissan Rogue CVT?

No, we found no recall for CVT failure in NHTSA’s recall file for the Rogue, only a campaign on the shift selector knob of certain 2015 Rogues, which could be shifted out of Park without the brake pedal pressed. Nissan’s separate CVT warranty extension covered 2014–2018 Rogues for 84 months or 84,000 miles from the start of the original warranty, and a Nissan dealer can check a car by its VIN.

Is a 2019 Nissan Rogue CVT covered by the extension?

No, Nissan’s CVT warranty extension lists the 2014–2018 Rogue and the 2019 is not on that list. A Nissan dealer can check a car by its VIN.
