Can You Mix Synthetic and Conventional Oil?

Yes, and it was engineered that way — there's a test standard behind it. The question worth asking is a different one.

Short answer

Yes. It's tested for, and the industry sells the mixture in a bottle.

Every oil carrying an API license has passed a miscibility test against reference oils, so a mixture won't separate, gel or damage anything. What the mixture loses is its approval. On an engine whose manual names one, that's the part worth thinking about.

This question gets asked in a hurry, usually in a gas station parking lot with a low-oil light on and the wrong bottle in hand. Regular oil and conventional oil are the same thing, so mixing synthetic and regular oil is the same question under a different name.

The short version is that you should put the oil in. Running a quart low is a real problem; a mixed sump is mostly a theoretical one.

The longer version is more interesting, because the reason mixing is safe isn't "it probably works out." It was engineered to be safe, deliberately, and there's a test standard behind it.

Why mixing is safe: somebody already thought of this

Motor oils have to be compatible with each other by design. The reasoning is plain enough: a driver topping off at a service station has no idea which brand is already in the engine, and an oil that gelled when it met a competitor's product would ruin engines constantly.

So the API's licensing system requires a homogeneity and miscibility test, ASTM D6922. An oil is mixed with reference oils, cycled through a prescribed range of temperatures, and checked for separation. Any oil with an API license has passed it, which means it is compatible with every other oil that has.

That's why the answer to "will it hurt my engine" is a straightforward no, and why every shop, oil company and service chain gives the same answer. They're all reading the same standard.

Worth knowing

The strongest evidence that mixing is fine is that the oil industry bottles the mixture and sells it. A synthetic blend is exactly that: synthetic and conventional base oils mixed on purpose, at a price between the two. If combining them were harmful, the shelf wouldn't carry a product made of it.

What the standard doesn't promise

Here's the sentence that the rest of this article hangs on, and that almost nobody quotes. Passing the miscibility test guarantees the mixture will stay homogeneous and won't damage the engine. It guarantees nothing about whether the resulting mixture still meets any license, specification or approval that either oil met on its own.

Those are two different questions, and the internet answers only the first one.

  • Will it hurt the engine? No. That's settled, and it's what the test covers.
  • Is what is now in the oil pan still an approved oil? Not necessarily, and nobody can tell you, because no one tests mixtures.

On most cars the second question doesn't matter much. On some it matters a great deal, and the difference is whether your manual names a specification.

The engines where it actually matters

If your owner's manual asks for a manufacturer approval by name (not a viscosity grade, a code), then the approval is the requirement and a dilution of it is a departure from what the maker specified.

  • Ford WSS-M2C948-B. A low-SAPS 5W-20 written around the 1.0 EcoBoost, where the timing belt runs in the oil. Additives that protect metal attack rubber, so the additive chemistry is the point. The right oil for a wet belt engine covers why.

  • VW 504.00, BMW Longlife, Porsche C20. Same principle: a named code, and a list of oils that carry it. If you aren't sure whether your engine is one of the fussy ones, the engines that care most about oil chemistry is a good place to start.

Top a WSS-M2C948-B oil up with a supermarket 5W-20 that carries no approval and the viscosity is still right. The chemistry the approval was about is now diluted by an unknown amount. That's not a catastrophe; it's a reason to change the oil sooner rather than pretend nothing happened.

If your manual simply asks for "API SP, 5W-30", the approval question doesn't arise in the same way, and a mixed sump of two API SP oils is genuinely unremarkable.

"Synthetic" is a marketing word, not a chemistry

Part of the anxiety about mixing comes from imagining two incompatible substances. The line is blurrier than that, and it has been officially blurry since 1999.

Mobil complained to the Better Business Bureau's National Advertising Division that Castrol Syntec, which was made from hydrocracked petroleum base stock rather than chemically constructed molecules, shouldn't be sold as synthetic. In March 1999 the NAD found for Castrol: the reference works it consulted said a substance need only be substantially changed to count as synthetic, and hydrocracking clears that bar.

The practical result is that synthetic became a marketing term rather than a technical one in the US market. A bottle labeled full synthetic may contain heavily processed crude oil. A bottle labeled conventional contains less heavily processed crude oil. They're closer relatives than the labels suggest, which is one more reason mixing them is uneventful. What that label is worth, and what the numbers beside it actually describe, is a longer argument on its own.

The interval is the one people miss. Buying a full synthetic partly buys the right to leave it in longer; topping it off with conventional quietly cancels a share of that, and the sticker on the windshield doesn't know.

Topping off versus mixing motor oil at every change

These are different decisions and deserve different answers.

Topping off in an emergency. Put the oil in. A quart of the wrong type in a five-quart sump is roughly a 20% dilution of the properties you paid for and no risk at all to the engine. Being a quart low is worse than any of that, and it's worse immediately.

Mixing at every oil change, to save money. This is the one worth reconsidering, and not on safety grounds. You're paying part of a synthetic price for part of a synthetic benefit, on an interval set by the better half of the mixture. If the budget is the reason, a conventional oil changed on the conventional schedule is a more honest arrangement than a diluted synthetic on a synthetic schedule.

What to do about it

  1. In an emergency, add the oil. Match the viscosity grade if you've any choice at all. The grade matters more than the type.
  2. Check whether your manual names an approval. A code like dexos1 or WSS-M2C948-B changes the answer; a bare grade doesn't. How to read an oil bottle shows where these appear.
  3. If it names one and you diluted it, shorten the interval. Not an emergency. Just don't run the long interval on a mixture nobody has tested.
  4. Write down what went in. Type, grade, how much. It costs nothing and it's the only record that the next person to look at the oil will have.

Common questions

Can you mix synthetic and conventional oil? Yes. Every API-licensed oil has passed a miscibility test against reference oils, so the mixture stays homogeneous and does no harm. What it may no longer be is an oil that meets a named manufacturer approval.

Can you mix different brands of motor oil? Yes, and the same reasoning applies. Brand isn't the variable that matters; the specification on the back of the bottle is.

Will mixing cause sludge? No. Sludge comes from oil left in far too long, from severe short-trip use and from coolant or fuel getting into the oil, not from two compliant oils meeting each other.

Do I have to flush the engine before switching to synthetic? No. Switching is an ordinary oil change, and the residue left behind is a small fraction of the new fill. Whether an engine flush is worth buying at all is a separate argument.

What happens if you mix synthetic and conventional oil? Nothing dramatic, and nothing you would notice from the driver's seat. The two blend into a single oil whose properties sit between them, weighted by how much of each went in. The change is to the margin you paid for, not to whether the engine runs.

What is the difference between synthetic and conventional oil, then? Less than the two words imply. Both usually start as crude; the difference is how far it was processed and what the finished oil is blended with. Group III base stock is refined hard enough to be sold as synthetic in the US, and it sits directly beside Group II conventional on the same shelf.

Can you mix full synthetic with a synthetic blend? Yes, and it's the least eventful version of this question. A blend is already part conventional, so you're adjusting a ratio rather than crossing a line.

Is mixing engine oil bad for a high-mileage engine? No worse than for any other, but high-mileage oils carry seal conditioners and a different additive balance. Dilute one with an ordinary oil and you dilute the thing you bought it for.

How much conventional is too much? There's no published threshold, because nobody tests mixtures. That's the honest answer, and worth more than a number invented to sound precise. The useful rule is proportion: a quart in five behaves close to what you paid for, half and half doesn't.
