0W-20 vs 5W-30: What Actually Happens If You Use the Wrong One
One of these numbers matters far more than the other, and the honest answer depends on whether you filled up once by mistake or have been doing it for years.

0W-20 vs 5W-30 comes down to the second number. A single wrong fill won't damage a healthy engine — change it at the next service and move on. Running the wrong grade permanently is a slow problem, and it's worse to go thinner than specified than thicker.
This question turns up more than any other, usually from someone standing in a parking lot holding the wrong bottle, or from someone whose last shop used "whatever was in the bulk tank." The panic is understandable and mostly misplaced. But the reassurance you find online is often too broad, so it's worth separating the harmless case from the one that costs money.
Start with what the numbers mean, because half the confusion comes from reading them as one measurement rather than two.

0W-20 vs 5W-30: what the numbers describe
The first number, with the W. W is for winter, not weight. It describes how the oil behaves when cold — how easily it pumps around the engine in the seconds after a cold start. A lower number means it stays fluid at a lower temperature. 0W flows at a lower temperature than 5W.
The second number. This is the grade at operating temperature, around 100 °C. It's a measure of how thick the oil still is once everything is hot, which is when the engine is doing almost all of its living. A 30 is thicker when hot than a 20.
So 0W-20 and 5W-30 differ in both, but not equally. In a temperate climate the cold-start difference between 0W and 5W is small enough that most drivers will never notice it. The difference between a 20 and a 30 when hot is the one the engine notices.
Putting 5W-30 in an engine that asks for 0W-20
This is the more common mistake and the less dangerous one. You've gone slightly thicker than the designer intended.
What you may notice:
- A small fuel economy loss. Real, usually in the region of 1% to 2%, and easily lost in the noise of traffic and weather. Manufacturers specify thin oils partly to meet economy targets.
- Slower oil pressure on very cold mornings. Only meaningful if you live somewhere that gets genuinely cold. In a hot climate this is a non-issue.
- On some engines, variable valve timing complaints. This is the one worth knowing about. Modern VVT systems move cam phasers using oil pressure through narrow passages, and some are tuned tightly enough around a thin oil that a thicker one makes them sluggish. On a handful of engines that's enough to trigger a check engine light with a cam timing correlation code.
What you won't get is sudden damage. If you've one fill of 5W-30 in a 0W-20 engine, drive it normally and put the right oil in next time.
Putting 0W-20 in an engine that asks for 5W-30
This is the direction that deserves more caution, because you've gone thinner than the engine was designed around.
At operating temperature, the oil's job at the crankshaft bearings is to hold the metal apart with a film. How well it does that under heat and load is roughly what the industry measures as HTHS, high temperature, high shear viscosity. A 20-grade sits lower on that scale than a 30-grade, by design.
For a healthy engine in mild driving, running a grade thin is unlikely to cause a dramatic failure. The conditions where it matters are specific and they're worth taking seriously:
- Sustained high load — towing, mountain passes, loaded roof racks, long climbs in hot weather.
- Turbocharged engines, where the turbo bearing sees far higher temperatures than the oil pan ever does.
- Hot climates, where the oil never really cools down between trips.
- High-mileage engines with bearing clearances that have already opened up, where a thinner oil means lower pressure at idle.
If any of those describe your driving, don't run thinner than the manual asks for. The failure mode is neither dramatic nor immediate: accelerated wear that shows up years later as an engine that rattles on start-up and burns oil.
Worth knowing
Most people who end up on the wrong grade never decided anything. A shop that stocks one or two viscosities in bulk and uses them for everything that drives in. Nobody lies to you; nobody checks either.
The other route is buying on price. Two five-quart jugs sit next to each other, one is a few dollars cheaper, and the label difference is a single digit. That digit is the whole conversation.
If you take one habit from this article: read the invoice after a service and check the grade that went in. It takes five seconds, and it’s the only way you’ll ever catch it.
What if the manual lists more than one grade?
Plenty of manuals do, and it's not a contradiction. Some list a preferred grade for economy and an alternative for high ambient temperatures or heavy use. Some show a chart of viscosity against outside temperature.
If your manual explicitly permits 5W-30 as an alternative to 0W-20, then 5W-30 is simply the other right oil, and in a hot climate or under load it may be the better of them. Manufacturer permission is the thing that decides this, not internet consensus.
Can you mix them?
Yes. Both are engine oils built to the same broad standards, and mixing them in an emergency won't curdle anything or cause harm. You end up with something in between — add a liter of 5W-30 to an oil pan of 0W-20 and you've effectively a slightly thicker 0W-20.
Running low on oil is worse than running slightly the wrong grade, every time. If you're a liter down on a highway and the only bottle in the shop is the other viscosity, buy it and use it.
The mistake that matters more
Viscosity gets all the attention because it's printed on the front of the bottle in large type. The specification on the back matters more.
An oil can be exactly 0W-20 and still be wrong for your engine if it doesn't carry the approval the manufacturer requires — API SP, ILSAC GF-6A, dexos1, or a manufacturer's own code. Those approvals cover detergency, deposit control, and on modern turbocharged direct-injection engines, protection against low-speed pre-ignition, which is the failure mode that breaks pistons.

What to do about it
Three rules, in order:
- Follow the manual and the oil filler cap. If they disagree, follow the manual. The cap is a summary, sometimes of a different engine variant.
- If you filled the wrong grade once, do nothing dramatic. Drive normally, avoid towing and hard sustained load, change it at the next service and put the correct grade in.
- If you've been running the wrong grade for years, switch back at the next change. There's no flush needed and no transition period. If the engine has started using oil or knocking on start-up, mention it to a mechanic. That's a condition to investigate, not something a change of viscosity will reverse.
One more thing worth doing while you're thinking about it: check how long the oil has been in there, not just what grade it's. On most cars the interval is a bigger lever on engine life than the viscosity argument ever was.
