Do High-Mileage Cars Burn Oil? What the Makers Actually Allow
Most do, a little. The trouble is that every published figure for what counts as normal was written for a car with under 36,000 miles on it.

High mileage cars do burn oil, most of them, and use rises as an engine ages. What nobody mentions is that the published limits for “acceptable” consumption are warranty thresholds, written for cars still inside their coverage. Past that, there's no official number. Only whether the rate is steady and what it is costing you.
People ask whether high mileage cars burn oil expecting a yes or a no. The useful answer is a rate, a way of measuring it, and the knowledge that the figure a dealer will quote at you was written for a car with a fraction of your odometer reading.
Do high mileage cars burn oil? Usually, and usually a little
An engine has to put oil where fuel is burning. The cylinder walls are lubricated by a film thin enough to be scraped down by the piston rings on every stroke, and a fraction of that film is always in the combustion chamber when the spark arrives. It burns. That's not a fault; it's how the thing works.
What changes with age is how much. Piston rings lose tension, the honed crosshatch in the bore wears smooth, valve stem seals harden, and carbon builds in the ring grooves until the rings stop conforming to the bore. Every one of those is gradual. An engine at 140,000 miles is very unlikely to use exactly what it used at 20,000.
So the honest answer to the question is yes. The useful answer is that “burns oil” covers everything from a quart between services to a quart every two weeks, and those aren't the same car, the same problem, or the same bill.
The rule everyone quotes stops at 36,000 miles
Search for what counts as normal and you'll be told, confidently, that a quart every 1,000 to 2,000 miles is fine. That figure is real. It comes from manufacturer service bulletins, and the most widely circulated one is General Motors’ — bulletin 01-06-01-011Q, revised October 2024, covering 2025 and prior GM passenger cars and light trucks.
GM states it plainly: “The accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in the vehicles referenced is 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 3200 km (2000 mi).” Almost every article that quotes it stops at that sentence. The next one is the important one.
“This rate only applies to personal use vehicles, under warranty, that are driven in a non-aggressive manner and maintained in accordance with the appropriate maintenance schedule, with less than 58,000 km (36,000 mi).”
The standard for normal oil consumption is defined for a car with under 36,000 miles on it, still under warranty. It expires exactly where the question about high-mileage cars begins.
There's a second qualifier that gets dropped just as often. GM says an engine driven hard, high RPM, frequent engine braking, may use a quart every 500 miles, and that this is normal: “No repair is necessary.” A rate four times worse than the headline figure is still acceptable if you drove for it.
Two manufacturers, two lines, four times apart
If a single industry threshold existed, the makers would agree on it. They don't.
Toyota’s bulletin T-SB-0158-14 sets out the oil consumption test for the 2AZ engine, the four-cylinder in a generation of Camry, RAV4, Corolla and Matrix. The procedure sends the customer away and asks them to return after 1,100 to 1,300 miles; outside that window, “the results will be void.” If the dipstick isn't full when they return and one quart brings it to full, the repair applies.
That puts Toyota’s effective line at roughly a quart per 1,200 miles, against GM’s quart per 2,000. Same era, same kind of engine, thresholds that differ by nearly a factor of two, and by four once GM’s aggressive-driving allowance is counted. Neither is wrong. They're warranty policies, not physics, and they were negotiated rather than measured.
What owners report
Manufacturers publish what they will pay to fix. Nobody publishes what cars use, because nobody collects it. There's one place to get close: American owners describe consumption in their own words when they file a complaint with the federal regulator, and those complaints are public.
We read 33,019 of them, across twelve models and four model years, and pulled out every complaint stating a rate in the form owners naturally write it — “a quart of oil every 1,200 miles”, “1 qt every 1,000 miles.” Ninety-four did.
What owners report
Counted from NHTSA’s public complaints database in August 2026. Owner-filed, not ours, and the filters are written down in our tooling so anyone can repeat the count.
Of the 94 complaints that state a consumption rate, the median is one quart per 1,000 miles — twice GM’s accepted rate, and faster than Toyota’s test threshold. Thirty-six are worse than a quart every 500 miles. Five are inside GM’s published line.
Read that carefully, because it's easy to misread. It doesn't mean most cars burn a quart per 1,000 miles. People who file federal complaints are self-selected for having a problem, and someone whose car uses nothing has no reason to write in. What it shows is the shape of the complaint: by the time an owner is angry enough to contact the regulator, they're typically at double the rate their manufacturer calls acceptable, and being told the car is within spec.
Where the oil goes
Five routes out of the oil pan matter, and only two of them are expensive. That ratio is the reason a diagnosis is worth having before a quote is.
Valve stem seals harden with heat and age. Oil seeps past them while the engine sits, then burns off in a blue puff on startup or after a long idle at a light, and clears. Blocked PCV is the other cheap one: a stuck valve lets crankcase pressure push oil mist into the intake, and the part is often under forty dollars.
The expensive pair are both rings. Modern engines use low-tension piston rings deliberately, because lower friction means better fuel economy, and the trade is that they seal less well. Some engines have used oil from new for this reason. Worn or carbon-packed ring grooves are the other, and that's an engine-out job.
The fifth only exists on a turbocharged engine, and it behaves unlike the others. Shaft seals let oil into the intake or the exhaust housing, and it shows under load rather than at startup. If the smoke is blue and doesn't clear, that's the one to rule out first.

How to measure it, properly
Most arguments about oil consumption are arguments about measurement. Both bulletins spend more space on procedure than on thresholds, and the steps are worth copying because a dealer will use them on you.
- Rule out leaks first. GM’s procedure opens by verifying the engine has no external leaks. Oil on the driveway isn't consumption, and it's usually cheaper.
- Check the oil is the right grade. Too thin for the engine and consumption rises on its own. If you're unsure what yours takes, the approval on the back of the bottle decides it, not the viscosity on the front.
- Warm it up, then let it sit. GM specifies at least 15 minutes after shutdown, on level ground. A reading taken two minutes after switching off will be low, and you'll chase a problem you don't have.
- Fill to full, record the odometer, and drive. Toyota’s window is 1,100 to 1,300 miles. GM asks for 2,000. Outside the window the test is void, which is exactly how a claim gets refused.
- Top off from a sealed one-quart container. Toyota insists on it, for the obvious reason: you can't measure what you poured from a jug.
Do this before the conversation, not during it. An owner who arrives with two dated dipstick readings and a mileage figure is in a different conversation from one who says the car seems to use a lot.
When it is cheap, and when it's not
A quart every 2,000 miles on a 130,000-mile car costs about $10 a year in oil and one habit: checking the dipstick when you fill up. There's nothing to fix, and no shop visit that improves on paying attention.
Some models carry the reputation for a reason. The Chevrolet Equinox has more complaints naming oil consumption than any other model we scanned. The ranking is in high mileage cars to avoid.
A quart every 500 miles is a different matter, and not mainly because of the oil. It's the risk of running low between checks, and low oil pressure is what turns a tolerable engine into a replaced one. It also fouls plugs and loads the catalytic converter, and a converter is the kind of bill that makes an older car uneconomic on its own.
No manufacturer has published the line between them. What separates them is whether the rate is stable and whether you're actually checking. Consumption that has doubled in a year is a trend; consumption that has been the same for four years is a routine.
What to do about it
If you own the car: measure it properly once, write the figure down, and repeat in a year. That single number turns an anxiety into a maintenance item, and it's the only thing that distinguishes a stable engine from a deteriorating one.
If you're buying: ask when the oil was last topped off rather than when it was last changed. Sellers answer the second question readily and the first one badly. A car that needs a quart between services is normal for its age; one that needs it monthly is a car whose next owner buys the rings.
And treat “it’s within manufacturer spec” as the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one. Ask which specification, and what mileage it was written for. On a car past 36,000 miles, the honest answer is that the specification doesn't cover it, which is worth knowing before it is used to decline a repair. Common questions
Is burning oil bad for the engine?
The burning itself isn't what damages it. Running low is. Oil that has left the oil pan isn't lubricating anything, and consumption becomes dangerous at the point where the level can reach the pickup between your checks.
Will thicker oil stop it?
Sometimes it slows it, and it's not free. A grade heavier than the engine was designed for changes oil pressure and flow at cold start, which is when most wear happens. It also voids the approval the engine was built around. Treat it as a way of managing a known problem on an old engine, not as a repair.
Do high-mileage oils work?
They contain seal conditioners intended to soften hardened valve stem seals, and where the loss really is through the seals, some owners see a reduction. They do nothing at all for worn rings. That's worth knowing before assuming a bottle failed. It may simply have been aimed at the wrong route.
At what mileage do cars start burning oil?
There's no threshold. Some engines use oil from new by design; others are dry at 200,000. In the federal complaint record we scanned for our high-mileage cost breakdown, the median mileage at which owners reported any fault was 63,000, which says more about warranties than about wear.

What we didn't do
- We didn't measure any engine ourselves, and we have no access to warranty claim data, which is where the real consumption record lives and which no manufacturer publishes.
- The owner figures are keyword extraction from free text written by members of the public: complaints that describe consumption without stating a rate are invisible to it, and the 94 that do are a self-selected group with a grievance.
- We didn't attempt to work out the mileage at which consumption began, because owners write odometer readings, service intervals and consumption rates in the same sentence and the three can't be told apart reliably.
