Coolant Flush Cost: What Shops Charge vs Your Manual

A coolant flush is sold on a shop's mileage sticker. But your carmaker sets the interval, and its first change comes far later.

How much does a coolant flush cost?

Take 5's page describes removing the old coolant and adding fresh, with no flush chemical named. That leaves one question for any shop: what is run through the system?

A shop that doesn't publish a price can still quote one. Ask for the hours it books and its hourly rate, because the hours are what to compare between two quotes.

What's the difference between a coolant flush and a drain and fill?

The difference is what runs through the system in between. A drain and fill takes the old coolant out through the radiator plug and puts new coolant in, while a flush also runs something through to carry out what settled in it.

On a shop's menu either one may be called a coolant exchange or a radiator service, so the name on the quote doesn't tell you which. Our guide to whether a transmission flush is necessary separates them the same way for transmissions.

Is a radiator flush the same as a coolant flush?

Yes, and so is a cooling system flush. All three mean draining the old coolant, running something through the system and refilling with fresh fluid.

So a radiator flush costs what a coolant flush does. Whatever the quote calls it, ask what is run through the system.

Is a coolant flush really necessary?

Mostly in three cases: when your manual's interval comes up, when the wrong coolant went in, or when the coolant is dirty. A repair that drains the system ends with fresh coolant anyway, and the makers' own documents name each case:

1. When the manual says so

Go by your manual's interval, or on a Honda the Maintenance Minder, its dash reminder, showing item 5. A shop's sticker isn't that schedule. If its mileage is well short of your manual's, ask where it came from, and compare it with each carmaker's first change.

2. When the wrong coolant went in

A wrong coolant is a cause, not a date. Honda's manual allows another major brand's non-silicate coolant as a temporary fill. It then asks for the system to be "flushed and refilled with Honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible."

3. When the coolant is dirty

Dirty coolant is a finding you can see in the reservoir, not a guess. Ram's and Jeep's manuals tell owners to have the dealer clean and flush the system if the coolant is dirty or has visible sediment.

Coolant that simply isn't new isn't dirty, so ask to see what the shop saw before you agree. If the level keeps dropping, look for a coolant leak first.

What a flush is for

How often does coolant need flushing?

Much later by mileage than the menu boards say: every mileage in the table puts the first change at 100,000 miles or later. Some set years too, which come first on a little-driven car. Chain pages say 30,000–50,000, so a 40,000-mile flush is early unless your years come first.

Is my coolant flush quote too high?

It's too high if it runs well above Take 5's printed price without a reason the shop can name. Check these 4 things on the quote:

• Ask whether it's a flush or a drain and fill. They're different jobs, and the words get used loosely, so ask what is run through the system.
• Ask what the parts line covers. A system holds a few gallons, and store coolant is cheap by the gallon, so a parts figure in the hundreds is covering something else.
• Check your own schedule. If your manual's first change is 100,000 miles or later, a flush at 40,000 isn't due by mileage, so check the years too.
• Ask why now. Dirty coolant with sediment is a real finding, but coolant that simply isn't new isn't.

How do you flush a radiator yourself?

Drain, flush, drain again, refill, and get the air out. That's how to flush a radiator, or how to flush coolant on most cars:

1. Let the engine cool completely. A warm system is pressurized and the coolant is hot enough to scald.
2. Drain the old coolant into a pan. Look at what comes out. Oil in it, or a gauge that kept climbing on the drive before, can mean a leak such as a head gasket, so stop and have it diagnosed rather than flushed.
3. Refill with water, or a flush product only if your manual allows one, and run it warm. The thermostat, a valve that opens once the engine warms up, has to open, or the flush never reaches the engine block.
4. Let it cool completely, then drain again. Everything you just circulated is carrying what it lifted. A radiator drain leaves some coolant in the engine, which Honda drains through a block drain bolt.
5. Refill with the specified coolant. The code in your manual, mixed with distilled water as Honda's and Ford's manuals say, or premixed.
6. Bleed the air the way your manual says, then top off. Many cars bleed from cold with the cap off, others need a bleed screw, a small valve that lets trapped air out, and air left in the system can make the temperature gauge misbehave afterward.

Flushing a radiator is mostly waiting, but Ram warns that some vehicles need special tools to refill the system properly. If your manual says so, that step is a shop job even if the rest isn't.

Coolant is poisonous to children and pets. Wipe up spills, and take the old coolant to a recycling point rather than a drain.
