Timing Belt Replacement Cost in 2026: What You Should Actually Pay
Quotes for the same job swing from $450 to $1,800. Here's what drives the difference, and which parts of the quote are worth paying for.

A timing belt is a piece of reinforced rubber that costs about as much as a tank of fuel. Almost none of the bill is the belt. You're paying for the hours it takes to get to it, and for the parts that a competent shop refuses to leave in place while it's in there.
That's why two honest quotes for the same car can be $600 apart. One is quoting a belt. The other is quoting a belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, coolant and the front crank seal, done once, properly. The second quote looks worse and is usually cheaper over five years.
Before anything else, check whether your engine even has a belt. Most engines built in the last fifteen years use a timing chain, which is designed to last the life of the engine and isn't a scheduled service item. If a shop quotes a timing belt for a car that has a chain, stop and get a second opinion. That's either a mistake or something worse.

Independent shop rates in 2026 sit around $90–$150 an hour in most of the US, with dealers at $140–$220. Multiply that by the hours above and the shape of the bill becomes obvious: on a V6, labor is typically two-thirds of the total.
Worth knowing
The part that fails is almost never the belt. Belts come off looking serviceable, sometimes with the printing still legible. What turns up damaged is the tensioner or an idler pulley. A small sealed bearing that gets hot, dries out, and starts to howl or wobble. When one seizes it shreds a perfectly good belt in seconds.
That’s the argument against a belt-only job in one sentence. The belt is the cheapest thing in the kit and the least likely to be the reason the car is back.
Why the water pump goes in at the same time
On a lot of engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt, which means it sits behind the same covers, held on by the same bolts, reachable only after the same three to eight hours of work.
A water pump costs $40–$150. Fitting one on its own costs most of what the entire timing belt job costs, because the access work is identical. Declining the pump to save $90 today means that if it starts weeping in eighteen months, you pay the full labor bill a second time, and this time you also throw away the belt you just bought.
The exception is an engine where the pump is driven by the accessory belt and sits out in the open. On those, replacing it's a separate, much cheaper job, and there's no reason to bundle it. Ask which type yours is. A shop that can't answer that question quickly isn't the shop for this work.
Interference or not: the number that decides how bad a failure is
In an interference engine, the valves and the pistons use the same space at different moments. The timing belt is what keeps them taking turns. If it snaps, the pistons meet open valves at speed. Bent valves, damaged guides, sometimes a scored piston or a cracked head. Repair bills of $2,000–$5,000 are ordinary, and on a car worth $4,000 that's the end of the car.
In a non-interference engine, there's clearance. The belt breaks, the engine stops, you get it towed, and you pay for the belt job you were putting off. Annoying, not fatal.
Most modern belt-driven engines are interference designs, because tighter clearances make for better efficiency and emissions. Assume yours is unless you've checked. It changes the maths completely: on an interference engine, a $700 service is insurance against a $3,500 rebuild, and skipping it to save money is a bet you only get to lose once.
When it is due
Manufacturer intervals generally land between 60,000 and 105,000 miles (roughly 100,000–170,000 km), but mileage is only half the rule. Rubber ages whether you drive or not. Most manufacturers pair the mileage with a time limit of seven to ten years, and the time limit is the one people forget.

A low-mileage car that has spent nine years doing short trips is a more urgent case than a highway car that covered the same distance in three. Heat cycles, oil vapor and ozone harden the rubber; a belt that has never been near its mileage limit can still crack across the tooth roots.

Check your own service schedule for the real number. It varies by engine, not by model. Two cars of the same year and badge can have different intervals because they left the factory with different engines.
Wet belts: a newer and more expensive problem
Some recent small engines (Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost among them, and several PSA/Stellantis 1.2 PureTech units) use a belt that runs inside the engine, bathed in oil. It's called a belt-in-oil or wet belt design.
These need to be taken seriously for two reasons. Intervals are shorter, and the belt degrades if the oil is the wrong specification or is left in too long. When a wet belt breaks down, the shed material can block the oil pick-up screen, which starves the engine of oil and turns a belt failure into a bearing failure.
If you've one of these engines: use exactly the oil specification the manufacturer lists, change it early rather than late, and treat the belt interval as a hard limit rather than a suggestion. How to read the quote
Five questions, asked at the counter, will tell you more than any price comparison:
- Is this a kit or just the belt? You want the kit: belt, tensioner, idlers. If the estimate lists one line for "timing belt", ask what else is in it.
- Is the water pump belt-driven, and is it included? If it's belt-driven and not included, ask why not. There may be a good reason, but you want to hear it.
- What brand of kit? Gates, Continental/ContiTech, Aisin, INA and the vehicle manufacturer's own kit are all fine. An unbranded kit on an interference engine isn't worth the $60 it saves.
- Are the seals being checked? A weeping crank seal will contaminate a new belt. Doing it now costs minutes; doing it later costs the whole job again.
- Is coolant included? If the pump comes out, the system gets drained. Make sure the refill uses the correct coolant type — see can you mix coolant colors before anyone tops it up with whatever is on the shelf.
What to do about it
If your engine has a belt and you're approaching either the mileage or the years, book it. The job isn't an upsell; it's the maintenance item with the worst consequences for being late, and the failure gives you no warning you can act on.
Get two quotes, and compare what is in them rather than the totals. A $780 quote with a full kit, water pump, seals and correct coolant is better value than a $520 quote for a belt and two hours of labor.
