512 complaints, 22% of the total
half of the airbag system reports that give a mileage came before this
36 mention an injury, 9 a fire
The airbag system leads the 2013 Nissan Altima record at 22%, with powertrain close behind. Of the airbag system reports that give a mileage, half came before 14,000 miles. The costliest part on our cost list is the alternator, $133 to $252 for the part alone.
It's a count of reports, not a failure rate. Use it to decide what to inspect before buying, not to grade the car.
About half the airbag complaints describe the passenger airbag light coming on with someone in the seat, and nearly nine in ten lighting complaints describe dim headlights.

Is the 2013 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners filed more complaints about the 2013 Nissan Altima than about any other Altima year, and the airbag system draws the largest share. The four checks below are what the federal record can say; none of them is a reliability score.

I purchased a new 2013 altima sedan 2.5sl mid of march. 1. Passenfer airbag off light on. Passenger airbag seems to disable itself randomly. 2. Whining or whistling noise from engine bay. 3. When I make a turn(letf, right both) I can hear druming sound from back.
Front passenger seat airbag light comes on while a passenger is sitting in the front seat. This has happened many times since buying the car on 3/202013. The car has been back to the dealer at least 5 times and I'm told everything is working correctly. Nissan needs o correct this safety issue.

Dash mounted passenger air bag light illuminates...air bag system for passenger is off. Has occurred about 12 times since purchase in sep 2012. Light is lit sometimes for long periods of time; sometimes for short (minute or less). Dealer has replaced sensors in passenger seat. Problem continues.
The 2013 altima s has an intermittent airbag problem. Is noticeable when the weight of the passenger is about 120 pounds and slim. Have notified nissan consumer affairs and the dealer and despite a recall and parts being replaced the problem persists. More than likely is a software issue.
Adult passenger sitting in the front passenger seat. Airbag light indicating the air bags will not deploy goes on intermittently. Had the latest recall fix applied several weeks ago but this problem was not fixed. Been to the dealer 3 times for this problem.
Although my 2013 nissan altima had the passenger side airbag fixed at the dealership after a voluntary recall, the issue still persists. The passenger side of the vehicle does not detect someone sitting in the seat most of the time so the air bag light comes on notifying the driver that the air bag is off.
When it starts
Usually starts around 14,000 miles. Half of owners reported it between 1,500 and 50,000.
What to do
Have a passenger sit in front and watch the airbag light.

At a stoplight at a busy intersection, the car stalled. When put in gear it dies. After having it towed to the dealership, I was told that the cvt transmission was bad. The vehicle has 60,080 miles and the warranty is good to 60,000 miles.
My car only has 65000 miles. My car is stalling on me when shifting to reverse or drive. The dealership has run diagnostic and came back with transmission issue.

Two hours from home car shut off on highway, after it start shaking during shifts. After tow to service station, then to dealership, and home it was determined to be bad transmission with 60,000 miles on vehicle. This is a known and common issue with this model.
Stopped at a stop light. Made left turn car shuddered smoothed out and drove 1 mile and parked car for 30 minutes and got ready to move vehicle and shifted to reverse and engine stalled. Started engine put transmission in drive and engine stalled. Dealer say's transmission is bad and needs replaced.
Car has been stalling while driving in heavy traffic, stopping, and also jerking. Has had a new transmission put in by the nissan dealership. But the car still has the same issues. Car has been to the shop 4 times in the last 2 month, with no clear answers to the problem. The car is very unsafe to drive and needs to be recalled asap.
Purchased my car in 2014 with 36000 miles. Around 55,000 miles the gear shifter completely went out. Now I'm at 107,000 miles and my car is stalling when stopped. The car is not reading anything on the diagnostic tests at the dealership and no one is able to tell me what is wrong with the car. I live in a high traffic area so this is a very big deal.
When it starts
Usually starts around 69,000 miles. Half of owners reported it between 38,000 and 89,000.
What to do
Shift into Drive and Reverse a few times and watch for a stall.

I spoke to 5 town nissan who did a so called thorough check on my car stated that everything was perfect but the brake light went on. How can everything be perfect with the brake light going on. All I see is that these dealers say its good and cars are in perfect working condition when they are not.
The low beam headlights provide very little illumination which makes the car unusable at night. I did report to my dealer who suggested I purchase a new set on the internet and they would install them. I did that and thosre worked well for less than a year. The 2013 needs to be recalled tol replace the headlights with a newlly designed version.

Dim headlights. Dealer tested electrical connections bulbs, and voltage. Dealer states wear and tear on a vehicle with 48k miles.dealer will not replace headlight assembly at no charge.
The lights are very dim at night. I looked it up on the internet and it is a common problem with the 2013 altima. You can barely see the lane markers at night. Many people have this complaint. The dealer seems to know it is an issue and it requires a $700-$1100 complete replacement.
We have bad headlights. At night with low beams you cannot safely drive. You are forced to use high beams. Dealer has no solution other than replace for 1000k. On top of that the transmission went out at 70k. Unacceptable. But the lights are a huge safety issue and should be recalled. Nissan claims they are aware but do nothing
My headlights starting becoming dim around 70,000 miles they got so dim that I cold oly drive at night using my high beams. I took it to the dealer and they said the entire headlight assembly need to be replaced so I went ahead and did that. I also filed a complaint with nissan as this was a huge safety issue. The repair cost about $1,200 and nissan is not willing to help or admit there was a defect.
When it starts
Usually starts around 80,000 miles. Half of owners reported it between 55,550 and 112,000.
What to do
Check both low beams at night if you can.

Rear passenger control arm broke going down highway at 60 mph. Back end started to fishtail. Luckily did not get into an accident.was able to drive to a dealership and get it repaired for $800. Not sure if I feel safe in the car anymore.
While driving my 2013 altima the driver side rear lower control arm snapped - lucky car was going slow enough where no accident or body injury occurred. The car just came off the thruway 10 mins before this happened. All work was done at the dealer since purchase and we are the only owner.

Vehicle when driving suspension springs sounds keep having problems can't have 3 passengers sit on back, due to causing weight barrier springs smell something burning and no power when driving.
Right rear control bar snapped as I was driving at highway speeds. Approximately 65 mph. Multiple news articles indicate there is an issue with this on altima's rangin from 2013-2018. Have spoken with the dealer and nissan about impeding recall with no acknowledgement or assistance from manufacturer or dealer.

Car intermittently stalls without warning. Car is under original manufacturer warranty. Car died once while I was in motion driving through an intersection, 3 times while stopped on a highway at a traffic light and once in my driveway while I was moving. Has been to 2 different dealers, 2 times each for a total of 4 repair attempts, continues to stall. 5th repair attempt scheduled.

I purchased this car on 3/8/2013 as brand new with 24 miles on it. 7 days later when starting up the motor the engine struggled to catch or start running. This has happened 3 times now. Will be contacting nissan. This is unacceptable for having a week old "new" car. Still waiting for response from dealership.
