Brake Fluid Flush Cost: Is the Dealer Right That You're Due?

A brake fluid flush costs $180 to $250 and up on the dealer service menus we read, and the fluid itself is $2.66 to $14 a bottle. Whether you're due is your carmaker's call, not the dealer's: Toyota and Ram schedule no change at all, and GM waits five years.

A service advisor says your car is due for a brake fluid flush, and the quote is close to $200. Before you agree, it helps to know that the interval on the advisor's screen isn't always the one in your owner's manual.

Toyota's and Ram's dealers sell the service although neither maker schedules it. One Chevrolet dealer's page says every two to three years, where GM says five.

Is a brake fluid flush due on your car?

Your owner's manual decides, and the makers don't agree with each other. Some change the fluid on a calendar, some by miles, and two only inspect it.

Here's what each carmaker's own schedule says about brake fluid, with the fluid grade it names, in the table below:

BMWWhen the car's service display calls for it, with no fixed interval printedNot named in the X3 manual we read

Each row is that maker's own US manual or maintenance guide. Severe use shortens some intervals, as Nissan and Subaru note.

Some dealer pages quote a shorter interval than the maker's own. Here's what three dealers' pages say, against the carmaker's schedule:

  • A Toyota dealer. Every 2 to 3 years or 24,000 to 30,000 miles, where Toyota's guide only inspects the fluid.
  • A Chevrolet dealer. Every 2 to 3 years or 30,000 miles, where GM's manual says every five years.
  • A Honda dealer. Every 3 years whatever the mileage, where Honda's Maintenance Minder calls for it first.

A dealer can still find a reason after an inspection, and Toyota's guide says the dealer may recommend services based on the results. Ask what the inspection found, in writing, before you pay.

How much does a brake fluid flush cost?

A brake fluid flush costs $180 to $250 and up on the dealer service menus we read, fluid and labor together. The fluid is a small part of that, since the system on a 2023 Hyundai Sonata holds less than a quart.

Dealer prices are each dealer's own service menu at regular price. Fluid prices are every brake fluid a large online parts catalog lists for three cars, read October 15, 2026. All sources are listed at the end of this page.

No carmaker publishes a labor time for changing the fluid alone, so the hours behind a quote are the shop's own. Ask how long the job takes and what the hourly rate is.

Tire and quick-lube chains sell the same service as a brake fluid exchange, but the chains we checked print no standalone price. Two of them sell it only inside a bigger brake package, so ask whether a quote is for the fluid alone.

Dealer menus 3 dealers
  • Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealer, Florida. Brake fluid exchange, regular price $179.95.
  • Honda dealer, New Jersey. Brake fluid flush, regular price $197.45.
  • Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealer, Florida. Brake fluid exchange, starting at $249.95.

Is a brake fluid flush the same as an exchange?

For your wallet, yes. Carmakers' manuals say to replace or change the brake fluid, and shops sell that one service as a flush or as an exchange.

Dealers use both words on one page: a Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealer's exchange offer describes what a professional brake fluid flush typically includes. So compare quotes by what they replace, not by the word on the menu.

Honda is the one maker we read that says flush, and only after the wrong fluid went in. Its manual asks for the system to be flushed and refilled with Honda brake fluid as soon as possible.

Which brake fluid does your car take: DOT 3 or DOT 4?

The one your manual names, by its DOT grade, a federal standard printed on every bottle. DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are colorless to amber, while DOT 5 is a silicone fluid dyed purple.

Honda's manual says fluid marked DOT 5 isn't compatible with its brakes and can cause extensive damage. Toyota, Kia and Subaru accept DOT 3 or DOT 4, while Ford asks for a low-viscosity DOT 4.

The grades differ in how hot the fluid can get before it boils. The federal minimum boiling points for DOT 3 vs DOT 4 brake fluid are in the table below:

DOT 3 vs DOT 4 brake fluid boiling points
GradeDry boiling pointWet boiling point
DOT 3401°F284°F
DOT 4446°F311°F
DOT 5500°F356°F
DOT 5.1500°F356°F

The minimums every bottle must meet, and DOT 5.1 is the non-silicone version of the DOT 5 grade. Wet means the fluid after it has taken up water in the standard's lab test.

The wet figure is the one that matters as fluid ages, and the law makes the bottle print it. The label also has to say to keep the container clean and tightly closed, because the fluid draws in moisture.

Mixing is where the makers get strict. Subaru's manual says never to use different brands together and to avoid mixing DOT 3 and DOT 4, even of one brand.

A brake fluid bottle label reading DOT 4, minimum wet boiling point 311°F, keep container clean and tightly closed.

Why does old brake fluid need changing?

Brake fluid soaks up water over time, and water lowers the temperature at which it boils. Ram's manual says moisture in the fluid may cause it to boil unexpectedly during hard or prolonged braking.

GM's manual says the change prevents increased stopping distance, and Ford's says it prevents degraded braking performance. That's why every maker that sets an interval sets it by time, with or without miles.

Honda adds one more reason to use the named fluid. Its manual says non-Honda brake fluid can cause corrosion and decrease the longevity of the system.

How do you check your brake fluid?

Start with the level in the reservoir under the hood, which Ram's plan checks and fills as needed. Toyota's guide has the level and condition inspected, and Hyundai and Kia inspect the fluid every 8,000 miles or 12 months.

If the level keeps falling between visits, our brake fluid leak guide covers where it goes and what the fix costs. A low level can also bring on the brake warning light, which has its own page.

Some shops test the fluid for you: one service chain's free brake check tests it, and a quick-lube chain says its technicians test it for moisture. None of the carmaker documents we read names a test strip, so ask what a failed test measured.

Conclusion

Check the schedule, then the price

Whether a brake fluid flush is due is in your owner's manual, not on the dealer's menu. Here's what to take to the service desk, from the documents and prices on this page:

  • Find your maker's rule. Toyota and Ram only inspect the fluid, GM changes it every five years and Ford every three.
  • Ask what the inspection found. A recommendation after an inspection should come with its reason in writing.
  • Match the fluid. Use the DOT grade your manual names, and keep grades and brands apart.
  • Compare the price. The dealer menus we read ran $180 to $250 and up for the whole job, and the fluid costs a few dollars.

Common questions

Asked most often

Is a brake fluid flush really necessary?

It depends on your carmaker. Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Subaru and Volkswagen schedule a change, while Toyota's and Ram's schedules only check the fluid.

How much should a brake fluid flush cost?

The dealer service menus we read ran $180 to $250 and up for the whole job. The fluid alone is $2.66 to $14 a bottle at the counter.

Why is a brake fluid flush so expensive?

Most of the bill is labor, not fluid. No carmaker publishes a labor time for the job, so ask the shop for its hours.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Ford says every three years, GM every five, and Hyundai and Kia every 48,000 miles or 48 months. Toyota and Ram schedule no change at all, so check your own manual.

Can brake fluid last 5 years?

On a GM car, yes: GM's manual says to replace it every five years. Ford says three years, and Volkswagen two years after the first three.

Can I put DOT 4 instead of DOT 3?

Only if your manual allows it. Toyota, Kia and Subaru name DOT 3 or DOT 4, while Honda specifies its own DOT 3 fluid.

What happens if I mix DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluid?

Subaru's manual says to avoid mixing DOT 3 and DOT 4, even of the same brand, and never to use different brands together. Use the grade your manual names.

How much brake fluid does a car need?

Hyundai's manual gives 0.74 to 0.85 US quarts for the 2023 Sonata. Your own manual lists the figure for your car.

What we didn't do

We didn't find a carmaker labor time for this job, and the chains we checked print no standalone price, so the job price comes from dealers only. We read one or two current US documents per maker, not every model's manual.

Prices are for the US market and were read in October 2026. Prices from $10 up are rounded to the nearest dollar, so $14.13 reads as $14 and $14.52 as $15. Below $10 they're exact. This article is general information, not advice about your specific vehicle. See the disclaimer.
