Honda CR-V 2017–2022: The 1.5T Oil Dilution Problem, Explained
Fuel getting into the oil made headlines and triggered a warranty extension. Here's what it means for a used CR-V today, and which ones to avoid.

The dilution issue was real, was worst in cold climates on early cars, and was addressed by Honda through software updates and a warranty extension. A 2019-or-later 1.5T with service history is a sound purchase. On a 2017–2018, verify the updates were done.
The fifth-generation CR-V is one of the better used family cars you can buy: roomy, economical, cheap to insure and, on the whole, dependable. It also carries one serious asterisk, and enough noise was made about it online that plenty of buyers now avoid the car entirely.
That reaction is an overcorrection. The problem was narrower than the headlines suggested, and it's checkable. But it's not nothing, and a used buyer should understand it properly rather than take either "it destroys engines" or "it was overblown" at face value.

What Honda CR-V oil dilution is
Direct-injected turbocharged engines spray fuel straight into the cylinder at high pressure. When the engine is cold, some of that fuel doesn't burn completely, condenses on the cool cylinder wall, and slips past the piston rings into the sump.
Every direct-injection engine does this to a small degree. It's normal, and once the engine reaches operating temperature the fuel evaporates back out and is drawn away through the crankcase ventilation system.
The problem arises when the engine never gets properly hot. Short trips in cold weather mean fuel goes in faster than it comes out, and it accumulates. On the affected CR-Vs, owners in cold regions reported an oil level rising visibly above the full mark and a strong gasoline smell from the dipstick.
Why that matters is straightforward once you think about what oil is for. Gasoline in the sump thins the oil, which lowers the strength of the film protecting the bearings and the camshaft lobes. It also dilutes the additive package that handles wear and deposits. The engine doesn't fail dramatically; it wears faster than it should, quietly, and the bill arrives years later.
Which cars were affected
The engine at the center of it is Honda's L15BE, the 1.5-liter turbocharged four fitted to the CR-V through this generation. Closely related engines from the same L15B family went into the Civic and later the Accord, which is why the warranty extension reaches beyond one model. Worth getting the code right if you go looking: the L15B7 that comes up most often in search results is the higher-output version built for the Civic Si, not the engine in your CR-V. The CR-V complaints concentrated on the 2017 and 2018 model years, and overwhelmingly in cold climates.
Two things narrow the field usefully for a used buyer:
- The base 2017–2018 CR-V LX didn't have the turbo engine. It used the older naturally aspirated 2.4-liter with port injection. That engine plays no part in this story. Slower and thirstier, yes, and if the dilution issue worries you, it's also a completely clean way to sidestep it.
- Climate matters enormously. A car that spent its life in Arizona or Florida was far less exposed than one in Minnesota or Ontario. Ask where the car has lived, and check the title history rather than taking a seller's word for it.
What Honda did about it
Honda addressed the issue through a service campaign rather than a US safety recall. In broad terms it involved updated engine control software, revised climate control software to bring the engine up to temperature more quickly, an oil change, and in colder US states an extension of the powertrain warranty coverage for affected vehicles.
For a used buyer, the practical consequence is simple: the updates are tied to the vehicle, and whether they were applied is a matter of record. Any Honda dealer can look up a VIN and tell you which campaigns have been completed. That's a free phone call, and it's the single most valuable check on this car.
Later cars are progressively less exposed. By the 2019 model year and beyond, the changes were built in rather than retrofitted, and complaint volumes drop away sharply.
What owners report

US owners file complaints with the federal regulator, and the file is public, so this one can be counted instead of guessed at. Take the complaints logged against the 2018 CR-V and keep only those that name oil dilution or describe its signature. A level that climbs above full on its own, oil that smells of gasoline. That leaves 172 out of 2,112. For the 2017 car it’s 173 out of 1,752.
Then it falls away. Thirty-three complaints for the 2019 car, four for 2020, three for 2021, two for 2022. Raw counts drop for newer cars anyway, simply because fewer of them have been on the road as long, so the honest measure is the share: dilution runs at about one complaint in ten for 2017, one in twelve for 2018, then one in thirty-two, and under one in a hundred from 2020 on.
That's a real change rather than owners losing interest, and its timing sits with the revised software and the warranty extension. It doesn’t prove the fix worked, a complaint file can only show what people bothered to report, but it’s the closest thing to evidence that’s publicly available, and it points the same way.
How to check one before you buy
- Run the VIN past a Honda dealer and ask which service campaigns and recalls have been completed, and which are outstanding. Free, quick, and definitive.
- Pull the dipstick on a cold engine. Check the level against the marks (above full is a warning sign) and smell it. Gasoline is unmistakable.
- Look at the oil itself. It should look like oil. Thin, watery-looking oil on a car that has recently been serviced deserves a question.
- Ask for service records and look at the actual intervals rather than the stamp count. A car serviced every 5,000 miles in a cold climate has had an easier life than one stretched to the maximum.
- Ask where it lived. A cold-climate 2017 with no campaign work done is the one combination to walk away from.
- Drive it from properly cold. Listen for a rough or hunting idle in the first minute and check the temperature gauge climbs at a normal rate.
The other things to check on this generation
Dilution dominates the conversation, which means these get overlooked:
- Air conditioning condenser failures. A well-reported weak point on the earlier cars in this generation. Test the air conditioning properly, and not just for thirty seconds, it should stay cold. A condenser replacement isn't cheap.
- Infotainment quirks. The early system is slow and was criticised for lacking a volume knob. Not a reliability matter, but you'll live with it daily, so try it before you buy.
- CVT fluid history. The CVT in these is generally sound, but it's fluid-sensitive. Ask when the transmission fluid was last changed and with what. "Never" on a high-mileage car is a negotiating point.
- Brakes and rear pad wear. Worth checking on any used family car — see what a brake job should cost so you can price it into the offer.
What holds up
- Genuinely spacious interior and a large, usable boot
- Good real-world economy from the 1.5T
- Cheap and easy to service, parts widely available
- Strong resale, which cuts both ways when buying
- Ride and refinement still competitive against newer rivals

What to do about it
If you already own one, the useful actions are boring and effective. Confirm the campaign work is done. Change the oil on the shorter side of the recommended interval, especially through winter. Avoid a diet of five-minute journeys, and when you can, give it a longer run to bring it up to temperature. Check the dipstick monthly, level and smell.
If you're shopping, don't cross the CR-V off the list over this. Cross off specific cars: a 2017 or 2018 turbo from a cold state with no campaign record and no service history. There are plenty of others, and the same money buys a 2020 with none of the doubt attached.
