Short answer
The transmission, a belt or a bearing
A whining noise when accelerating points at the transmission, its gears, bearings or a CVT, when it rises with road speed and fades as you lift off. A whine that climbs with engine speed, from the front of the engine, points at the belt drive, and on some Toyotas the carmaker still covers the transmission fix.
A whining noise when accelerating is a high, steady tone that starts or climbs as you press the gas and usually drops when you lift off. Its pitch tells you where to look: rising with road speed points to the transmission or the differential, rising with engine speed points to the belt drive.
The federal complaint record is led by the Toyota Highlander, then by Nissans. Some of those whines are covered by the carmaker, and for one Toyota program the owner has to ask.
Below is how to tell the sources apart, which cars the makers fix free and until when, and what the parts cost on the models drivers ask about or complain about most. It comes from more than 30 carmaker documents and about 680 federal complaints that mention a whine and acceleration together.

Why is my car whining when I accelerate?
Because something that spins is worn, loose or short of fluid, and pressing the gas loads it. The carmakers' documents name the same handful of parts, and the belt turns some of them while the wheels turn the rest, which is why the pitch follows engine speed or road speed:
A rattle is a different noise, from something metal shaking loose or from engine knock, and rattling noise when accelerating covers it.
1. Transmission gears
A whine that usually follows road speed, sometimes with harsh shifts, reduced power or a warning light. Toyota's T-SB-0160-18 and T-SB-0008-21 name it, and the transmission section tells it apart.
2. CVT
A whine or grind that may grow with road speed, and on older Nissans a slowdown when the CVT runs hot. Nissan's NTB15-102b and NTB16-090 cover it, and the Nissan section has the detail.
3. Differential
A final drive whine above 35 mph on some Highlanders, or a rear axle whine on some GM trucks, following road speed. Toyota's T-SB-0097-13 and GM's 13430 name it.
4. Wheel bearing
It follows road speed too, and Mazda's SA-020/25 warns its noise gets mistaken for a differential, transfer case or transmission. Ask for the bearings to be checked before either is opened.
5. Belt drive
A chirp, squeal or whine from the front of the engine, from the belt, a pulley or the alternator; one that follows engine speed, even revving in Park, points here. GM's PIE0804A names the noise from the front, and the alternator section covers the charging side.
6. Power steering pump
A pump whine between idle and 2,000 rpm in GM's PIT4208D, on a car that still has a hydraulic pump. The steering section has the fixes.
7. Blocked PCV system
The PCV system is the valve and hoses that pull fumes out of the engine's crankcase, and a blocked one whines from the back of the engine. GM's test in PIP5612A is to take the oil filler cap off and listen: if the whine stops, the system gets checked for a blockage.
8. Turbocharger
A whine during acceleration, in gear or in Neutral, from a bent compressor blade in the turbo. GM's 17-NA-222 names it on the 2016 to 2018 Colorado, Canyon, Express and Savana with the 2.8L diesel, and the fix is a new turbocharger.
9. Torque converter
A whine from the torque converter housing during acceleration that goes away once the converter clutch locks up. Ford's 13-6-4 names it on some 2012 F-150s and 2013 Mustangs with the 3.7L built in mid-2012, fixed with a new converter and front pump seal, 3.8 to 5.5 hours under the new vehicle warranty.
10. Manual transmission
On a manual, a high-pitched whine in one or two gears. Toyota's T-SB-0186-17 names it in 5th or 6th on the 2016 and 2017 Tacoma six-speed manual, and the fix is a new heat insulator on the clutch release cylinder, 0.5 hours.
11. A/C compressor
A whine that changes with engine speed and goes away when the A/C is turned off. Acura traces one on the 2014 to 2017 RLX to compressor noise traveling up the refrigerant lines, and Infiniti one on the 2011 and 2012 M37 and M56 to the compressor running.
12. Tire noise
A whine at high speed that comes from the tires, not the car. Audi's bulletin 2079696 puts it down to resonance inside the tire's air cavity on 2020 and later models, and says there's no repair beyond explaining it.

Yes, most likely, if it climbs with road speed, fades when you lift off and comes back on the gas. Toyota's bulletins for the 2017 and 2018 Highlander and Sienna eight-speed name a whine while driving, a harsh shift, reduced power or a warning light, and the fix is a remanufactured transmission.
Owners describe exactly that pattern: a whine under power that stops when they coast. Toyota's bulletin for some 2021 Avalon, Highlander and Camry transmissions traces a whine or grind to the front carrier's pinion shafts, by serial number.
Some whine is normal. Ford tells its dealers that a small amount is characteristic of its 10R80 10-speed in 2017 to 2019 F-150s and others, rising with engine speed even in Park, and that it has no effect on durability.
So revving in Park doesn't clear the transmission on a 10R80. Mazda warns its dealers of the opposite mistake: a worn wheel bearing gets taken for a differential, transfer case or transmission whine.
What the data says
About 680 federal complaints from 2010 to 2025 model years mention a whine and acceleration together, and 180 of them are Highlanders. The transmission comes up in 491, and 90 say no warning light or code came on.
NHTSA complaint file (FLAT_CMPL), 2010 to 2025 model years, once per complaint number, a whine anywhere in the text with acceleration or the gas pedal. Mentions, not confirmed causes; belt and alternator whines are rarely filed at all.
What owners report
A 2019 Camry owner wrote: Whenever I press the gas peddle a whining noise starts and increases as I accelerate. A 2019 Highlander owner added: When you let go of the gas it stops.
Complaints 11669343 and 11668011 in the NHTSA complaint file (FLAT_CMPL), in the owners' own words, read September 25, 2026.
Why does my Nissan make a whining sound when I accelerate?
Because of the CVT, going by Nissan's own bulletins. On a 2013 to 2017 Altima or a 2014 to 2017 Rogue with the 2.5, one names a whine or grind from the CVT on acceleration or at a steady highway speed, with no trouble codes, that may grow as speed rises.
The shop checks the reduction gear bearings, then rebuilds or replaces the CVT.
Older ones add a warning. On a 2011 to 2013 Rogue or a 2014 or 2015 Rogue Select without the tow package, or a 2011 or 2012 Altima 4-cylinder, a CVT that runs hot, after an hour or more at high speed, in 96°F heat or on a long climb, goes into a protection mode with a whine or rattle and reduced power.
A CVT, or continuously variable transmission, uses a belt between two pulleys instead of fixed gears. Our guide to CVT transmission problems covers the rest of Nissan's record, and the coverage section below says what Nissan's extensions covered.
Does a bad alternator whine when accelerating?
It can: when its bearings wear, our guide to how long an alternator lasts explains, you hear grinding or whining from the front of the engine, rising and falling with engine speed. Our guide to a bad alternator or battery covers the free test that settles it.
GM's bulletin for some 2020 to 2024 full-size trucks and SUVs with the 5.3 or 6.2 names a chirp, squeal or whine from the front during a cold start or while driving, and sends dealers to diagnose the accessory drive belt.
Why does my car whine when I turn?
Because of the power steering, on a car that still has a hydraulic pump: a whine that changes as you turn the wheel points at the pump or low fluid. GM's bulletin for its 2003 to 2013 trucks and SUVs puts pump whine between idle and 2,000 rpm, and passes on dealer reports that a fluid flush helped, which GM says it hasn't evaluated.
GM's bulletin for a pump whine at slow speeds on the 2007 to 2011 Impala goes further: bleed the air out, and don't replace the pump or the rack for the noise. A car with electric steering has no pump at all, as the 2019 Camry's manual shows.
Is it safe to drive a car that is whining?
A whine on its own usually isn't an emergency, but a whine with harsh shifts, a warning light or a car that won't pick up speed is a transmission asking to be looked at soon. Those are the symptoms Toyota's Highlander bulletins list with the whine.
Nissan's protection mode slows the car itself, which matters in fast traffic. Chrysler recalled some 2015 and 2016 Town & Country and Grand Caravan minivans, and 2016 Journey and ProMaster models, because the transmission pump could seize, and owners describe a whine before losing drive.
A belt whine is less urgent, but watch the battery light, which the 2018 Accord's manual says comes on when the battery isn't charging. Our guide to low transmission fluid symptoms covers the leaks that can starve a transmission.
Which whines do carmakers fix for free?
Several, and it pays to ask by the program's number: Toyota's bulletins bar dealers from marketing these programs directly. The documents we found:
- Toyota ZJC, 2017 and 2018 Highlander and Sienna.Damage to the UA80 transmission from a loose washer tab, 10 years from the car's first use, whatever the mileage, on the VINs Toyota lists. A car first used in 2016 runs out during 2026.
- Toyota 26TE06, 2018 and 2019 C-HR.A new or remanufactured CVT for an abnormal whine, until September 30, 2027 whatever the mileage, then 10 years or 120,000 miles. Toyota says it notifies owners by mail.
- Toyota T-SB-0008-21, some 2021 Avalon, Highlander and Camry.By transmission serial number, under the 60-month or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
- Nissan's CVT extensions.84 months or 84,000 miles, up from 60 months or 60,000, on listed 2012 to 2019 Rogue, Altima, Sentra, Versa, Pathfinder, Murano, Maxima and Juke models, so most have now run out; a dealer checks by VIN.
The gap is the 2019 and 2020 Highlander: 76 complaints mention a whine on acceleration, and we found no Toyota document covering those years. Run your VIN through our free VIN checker or NHTSA's recall lookup, then ask the dealer about each program by its number.
How much does it cost to fix a whining noise when accelerating?
Parts for the causes priced below run from $5.87 for a quart of transmission fluid to $436 for an alternator, and the labor times show the spread. A power steering flush is 0.9 hours of GM dealer time and a Camry transmission cable 1.7, while replacing a 2017 or 2018 Highlander's transmission is 7.3 to 8.2 hours and a C-HR's CVT 6.5.
That's why the coverage programs matter more here than for most noises: when a program covers the car, those hours are on the carmaker's bill.
When you do pay, here are the parts on the Silverado, the Camry, the Accord and the Highlander:

Every listing RockAuto shows as fitting each car, read September 26, 2026 (US Eastern), with closeouts and out-of-stock rows left out. Belt-and-tensioner kits and the Silverado's other accessory belts are left out, so each row prices one part. Alternator prices leave out the core charge. The fluid row keeps quart and liter containers. The catalog lists no power steering pump for the Silverado or the Camry, whose steering is electric, and no priced idler pulley for either. The Highlander's steering wasn't read.
How do you fix a whining noise when accelerating?
By pinning down what the whine follows before anyone orders a part, because the transmission and a pulley can sound alike. To fix a whining noise when accelerating, work through the 6 steps below, in order:
- Note when it whines. On the gas only, coasting too, revving in Park, or when you turn the wheel.
- Check the lights. A battery, check engine or transmission light narrows it fast, and harsh shifts with it mean the transmission.
- Try the oil cap. On a 2019 Silverado or Sierra 1500 V8, a whine that stops with the oil filler cap off points at the PCV system, not the transmission.
- Run the VIN and ask about coverage. Name the program: ZJC, 26TE06, or Nissan's CVT extension for your year.
- Rule out a wheel bearing. Mazda warns that bearing noise gets mistaken for a differential or transmission, so ask for the bearings to be checked before either is opened.
- Get the diagnosis in writing. Which part, and parts and labor on separate lines.
If the transmission also slips or flares between gears, our guide to transmission slipping covers what that adds.

What Toyota and Ford say about the whine
Two programs pay for it, and one bulletin says a little of it is normal.
We opened each one at the source, and every quote below is in the carmaker's own words.

Conclusion
Find what the whine follows, then ask who pays
A whine on the gas comes from the transmission, a belt or a bearing, and the ones that aren't the transmission give themselves away by what their pitch follows. Here's what to do about a whining noise when accelerating, from the bulletins, programs and complaints:
- Road speed, fading off the gas.A whine that climbs with road speed, fades when you lift off and comes back on the gas points at the transmission, its bearings or the differential. Ask for the wheel bearings to be checked first, because Mazda warns their noise gets mistaken for both.
- Engine speed, from the front.A whine that follows engine speed, even revving in Park, points at the belt, the pulleys or the alternator. It's less urgent, but watch the battery light, which means the battery isn't charging.
- Changes when you turn.On a car that still has a hydraulic pump, a whine that changes as you turn the wheel is usually the pump or low fluid. Many newer cars steer electrically and have no pump at all.
- A 2017 or 2018 Highlander or Sienna, or a 2018 or 2019 C-HR.Toyota's ZJC program covers damage to the Highlander and Sienna transmission from a loose washer tab for 10 years from first use, and dealers aren't allowed to market it, so ask by its number. Program 26TE06 covers the C-HR's CVT for a whine until September 30, 2027, then 10 years or 120,000 miles.
- A Nissan CVT.Nissan extended its CVT coverage to 84 months or 84,000 miles on listed 2012 to 2019 models, so most have now run out. A dealer can still check yours by VIN.
So work out what the whine follows before anyone quotes a transmission, and ask about coverage by number. Oil & Miles reads the carmakers' own bulletins before the usual list of causes.
Common questions
Asked most often
How long will a whining transmission last?
No carmaker gives a figure. Ford says a small whine on its 10-speed has no effect on durability, while Toyota's Highlander bulletins pair the whine with harsh shifts and lost power, and those transmissions get replaced.
Why is my car whining but driving fine?
A whine can come with no other symptom: about 90 of the federal complaints say no warning light or code came on, though 19 of those also describe lost power. It can still be a transmission, a bearing or the belt drive, so note what the pitch follows and have it checked before it changes.
Why does my truck whine when I accelerate?
On GM trucks the documents name the belt drive (some 2020 to 2024 Silverado 1500s), a blocked PCV system (2019 Silverado 1500) and the rear axle (2014 Silverado 1500 with a locking differential and the 3.73 axle). On a Ford 10R80 10-speed a small whine is normal.
What does a fuel pump whine sound like?
GM's bulletin for its 2015 to 2025 diesel models names a whine from the in-tank fuel pump when the diesel gels in the cold. The cure is warming the fuel above 32°F.
Can low transmission fluid cause a whining noise?
It can be part of it: Toyota's bulletins for a Highlander final drive whine and a Camry transaxle whine test-drive to confirm the whine, then check the fluid level, and stop there if correcting it improves the noise. Nissan warns that an overfilled CVT can cause symptoms too.

How this was compiled
The questions and their order come from what drivers type into search about this noise. The cars priced are the three models named most in those searches, plus the Highlander, which leads the complaints.
The complaint count matches a whine anywhere in a complaint that also mentions acceleration or the gas pedal, once per complaint number. A hand check of 25 at random found 17 that describe a whine on the gas or with a loss of power, so the count is mentions, not causes.
What we didn't do
We didn't listen to a car or put one on a lift. We found no Toyota document for the 2019 and 2020 Highlander whine, and we didn't check whether Toyota's C-HR letters have gone out.
A Nissan dealer's page and several forum threads on this noise turned us away. We didn't price labor, because a shop's time to find a whine varies more than the parts do.
Prices are ranges compiled in September 2026 for the US market and vary by region, engine and shop rate. Prices from $10 up are rounded to the nearest dollar, so $14.13 reads as $14 and $14.52 as $15. Below $10 they're exact. This article is general information, not advice about your specific vehicle.
