Low Transmission Fluid Symptoms and When to Stop Driving

Slipping, overheating, noises and a warning light make up the usual list of low transmission fluid symptoms. We wanted each one traced to a carmaker, and one of them doesn't hold: the dash light is usually read as a sign of low fluid, and in every owner's manual we read it measures heat.

So we took the symptoms from the carmakers' own documents instead. We read owner's manuals from GM, Ford, Hyundai, Honda and Nissan, and two recall reports where a maker describes what low fluid feels like.

We also priced the fluid and the pan gasket for three cars from the models drivers ask about most when it comes to transmission fluid.

GM and Ford both put it plainly: a transmission doesn't burn fluid the way an engine burns oil, so a low level is a leak somewhere, and topping it off only buys time.

What are the symptoms of low transmission fluid?

Slipping, slow shifts and jerking are the signs of low transmission fluid that carmakers name themselves. These five low transmission fluid symptoms each come from a maker's own document:

• SlippingThe engine revs rise and the car doesn't speed up to match. Ford and Hyundai both tell you to check the fluid level when it slips.
• Slow shiftsFord's owner's guides pair it with slipping as the reason to check the level.
• Jerking or hesitation, with the check engine lightNissan's recall report for the 2024 Sentra: a leak lowers the fluid pressure, the car can jerk or hesitate, and the check engine light comes on.
• A slight vibration and a warning indicatorMitsubishi's recall report for the 2015 Outlander Sport CVT: a warning light that can come on as the fluid pressure drops, and a vibration as the fluid runs low.
• A red or brown dripThe leak itself. Toyota's maintenance guide inspects a sealed transmission for leakage rather than for level.

Shops add a delay before Drive or Reverse engages, a whine or other noise, and a burning smell. Those fit, but we didn't find a carmaker naming them for low fluid.

Why is my transmission fluid low if nothing burns it?

Because it's leaking. GM's 2020 Equinox manual puts it in one line: a transmission fluid leak is the only reason for fluid loss.

Ford's owner's guides say the transmission doesn't consume fluid, and GM's heavy-duty Silverado manual adds overheating as the one other way out.

The recalls show three places transmission fluid leaks out, two of them at a cooler line:

• A cooler line rubbed throughJeep recall 13V-234, 180,131 Wranglers from 2012 and 2013: a power steering line wore a hole in the transmission cooler line. A test vehicle lost all its fluid.
• A cooler line not seatedGM recall 14V-152, 489,936 trucks including the 2014 Silverado 1500: fluid could leak from the fitting onto a hot surface and start a fire.
• A cover missing its boltsGM recall 20V-668, 194,105 cars and SUVs from 2018 to 2020: the leak may progress to a loss of propulsion.

Most leaks are nothing so dramatic: a pan gasket, a line or a seal. Our transmission leak guide shows where it's leaking from.

How do you tell if your transmission fluid is low?

To know if you need transmission fluid, check it the way your own manual says. How you tell if transmission fluid is low depends on which of three kinds of transmission you have:

• A dipstick you can readMost older automatics and many trucks. The method differs by maker: Ford's guides have the engine running in Park, while a Honda owner's manual for an older automatic has you shut the engine off first.
• A sealed unit with no dipstickGM's 2020 Equinox manual says it isn't necessary to check the level, and calls checking it a special procedure for the dealer.
• A CVTA continuously variable transmission, with no fixed gears. Honda tells 2023 Accord owners not to check or change the fluid themselves, and Nissan sends Altima owners to a dealer.

Color is a separate question from level, and dark fluid isn't always bad.

Is there a warning light for low transmission fluid?

Not in any owner's manual we read. The transmission warning, one of the dashboard warning lights, the one many drivers call the transmission fluid symbol or light, reports temperature, not level:

Low fluid shows up on the dash only indirectly. Nissan's Sentra recall names the check engine light, and Mitsubishi's a warning light that can come on as fluid pressure drops.

A hot warning can still follow from low fluid, because less fluid runs hotter, which is why slipping gets worse.

Can you drive with low transmission fluid?

Only as far as a shop, and not at all if the dipstick is dry: Ford says don't drive with no fluid on the stick above 50°F. No carmaker gives a safe distance.

We found a 10 to 15 mile figure in circulation, and no source behind it.

Driving on low transmission fluid can end in two ways without much warning:

• Losing driveGM's filing for recall 20V-668 lists no warning at all before the leak progresses to a loss of propulsion.
• A fireGM's filing for recall 20V-668 adds that leaking transmission oil near an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

What happens if you keep driving on low transmission fluid?

The transmission wears itself out. GM's service bulletin 15667, the repair instructions it sends its dealers, says an under-filled transmission, on its eight-speed automatic, will cause premature component wear or damage.

Jeep's recall filing records the extreme case, a test vehicle that lost all its fluid before the end of its test.

Can too much transmission fluid cause the same symptoms?

Yes. Ford's guides say a level above the safe range can cause shift and engagement concerns and may lead to transmission failure.

GM's bulletin 15667 adds what the extra fluid does: it discharges out of the vent tube, foams, and makes the pump cavitate, drawing bubbles instead of fluid.

It's how a false "low" becomes a real fault: a level read cold looks low, fluid goes in, and the car now shifts badly. Ford says to add fluid 8 fluid ounces, 250 ml, at a time, and our guide covers how much to add between readings.

What does fixing low transmission fluid cost?

Does a CVT or a manual show low fluid differently?

Yes, mostly in who can check it. A CVT shows low fluid much the same way, jerking in Nissan's recall and a vibration in Mitsubishi's, but you usually can't check it yourself.

Honda says not to check or change a 2023 Accord's CVT fluid yourself, and Nissan specifies its own NS-3 fluid and sends owners to a dealer. Our CVT guide covers a failing CVT.

What are the signs of low transmission fluid?

Slipping, where the engine revs but the car barely speeds up, slow shifts, and jerking or hesitation, sometimes with the check engine light. A red or brown drip under the car is the leak that caused it.

What happens when transmission fluid is low?

The transmission slips and runs hot, and a GM bulletin on its eight-speed says an under-filled transmission will cause premature wear or damage. Left long enough, it can lose drive altogether.

Can low transmission fluid cause slipping?

Yes. It's the first symptom Ford and Hyundai name: both say to check the fluid level if the transmission slips.

Can low transmission fluid cause overheating?

Yes. Less fluid carries less heat away, and slipping adds more. A transmission hot message is the warning the manuals we read describe; none has a light for low level.

Not in the owner's manuals we read. The transmission warning reports temperature. Low fluid shows up indirectly, through the check engine light or, on some cars, a low pressure warning.

How far can you drive with low transmission fluid?

No carmaker gives a distance. Ford says don't drive at all if there's no fluid on the dipstick and it's above 50°F outside, so drive only as far as a shop, and have it towed if the stick is dry.
