The steering leads the 2014 Ford Explorer record at 29%, with engine next at 12%. Of the steering reports that give a mileage, half came before 90,000 miles. The costliest part on our cost list is the electric power steering rack, $589 to $1,584 for the part alone.
It's a count of reports, not a failure rate. Use it to decide what to inspect before buying, not to grade the car.
The steering leads the complaints, most of them a warning light and a loss of power assist. Ford recalled Explorers of this generation for rear suspension toe links that may fracture, with separate campaigns for trucks in road-salt states.
2014 Ford Explorer overview
The 2014 Explorer came with a 3.5-liter V6, a turbo 3.5-liter V6 and a turbo 2.0-liter four, all with a six-speed automatic, in front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
For 2014, Ford made automatic headlamps standard, and improvements first offered on the 2013 Explorer Sport, such as a solid-mounted electric steering rack with better feel and larger brakes, became available on the 2014 Explorer. Heated second-row seats and adaptive cruise control were added or became more widely available.
Owners filed 25% fewer complaints about the 2014 than the 2013 (2,230), and the steering leads both years. The 2015 drew 1,770, with steering named most.

Is the 2014 Ford Explorer reliable?
The 2014 Ford Explorer ranks 5th of 16 Explorer model years for owner complaints, and the steering draws the largest share. The four checks below are what the federal record can say; none of them is a reliability score.

A internal fault in eaps steering rack, fault code 58530. Ford had recall on 2013 models, mine was shipped to dealer jan. 2014. Still had same issue as 2013. Has to more of them out there. Dealer did not inform of 2013 recall at time of repair. Steering was not ok when turning left made noise and vibrated.
The whole steering column and power steering locked down driving about 55 mph without warning. I had to muscle it off the road and out of harms way. I had it fixed by Ford and now it is messing up a second time.

Noticed loud grinding noise while turning either left or right while traveling around 40mph. No lights have come on yet. Took it to mechanic and he told me that the steering rack is failing and will need to be replaced. Ford quoted me roughly $1500 for the rack and labor, this is crazy that the 2011,12,13 recall doesn't cover the same problem that 2014's are having.
Whining, squeaking noise from steering column upon turning or moving the wheel at any speed, left or right. Dealer says the entire steering assembly and computer has to be replaced to prevent steering failure in the future, at the cost of $1900. I see other recalls for the same problem in years 2011-2013 and 2015-2017. I have also read a lot of online complaints about this same problem in other 2014 explorers.
Good morning, manufacturer recall number20s62 NHTSA recall number20v675 I feel that the recall for the rear suspension is also causing the steering wheels on many of the Ford explorers to squeak, or create a loud banging noise. My vehicle is currently squeaking every time I turn the steering wheel, this vehicle has never been in accident and never had the steering column replaced.
While operating my 2014 Ford explorer xlt, the steering was unresponsive and would seize up while driving around turns. Other times the steering while is extremely hard to turn while operating around turns on both city and highways. I believe the issue is with the electronic power steering.

Since I've owned my 2014 Ford explorer for the past six months I get sulfur smelling exhaust fumes coming from the a/c vents when quickly accelerating even if the a/c is in recirc mode and even when the fuel tank is not full. It is definitely exhaust odors and not fuel odors.
Anytime the Ford explorer goes over 3000 rpms there's a strong exhaust smell in the cabin of the car. Paid to look at out of pocket at the dealership and was told the problem could not be reproduced.

Strong "natural gas" smell inside car while driving and very noticeable outside of car upon exiting interior. Can smell from inside my house when parked in garage. Started 1/26/17 with 63,200 miles on my suv. Took to Ford for service on 1/30/17 and was told there were no emission problems and that it was due to my ptu which needed to be replaced along with ptu vent valve.
2014 Ford explorer sport, strong smell of engine exhaust fumes entering passenger cabin. Must drive with windows open to vent out passenger cabin. My safety as well as my family's safety is at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning, respitory distress, asthma and possible unconsciousness while driving. The overwhelming engine exhaust fumes within the passenger cabin at times is unbearable.
Exhaust fumes can be smelled when we start veh. And when we have rapid acceleration. Mentioned to dealer several times, was told very few others have had issues and no recall for item as of yet... That was last year in 2016. Date below on when it happened was when we purchased from dealership new.
My 2014 explorer has bad fume smells in the cabin when accelerating to pass vehicles. I have taken it to the dealer once to have it repaired but it still does it. I have also had a fume smell in my nose that is there when I am not in the car. I didn't know what it was and am scheduled for an mri but I have recently realized the car cabin smells the same as the smell in my nose.

Passenger side windshield trim peeling back and separating from the windshield, heavy vibration noise occurs at speeds over 15 mph, at 65 it is deafening. No accident, no rough travel, this is a soccer mom car, that goes to school, supermarket and home. No rough history of washes. Other issues listed online http://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/explorer/2014/windows_windshield/windshield_trim_falling_off.shtml
Driver's side window trim molding has come loose twice. This is a common problem with newer model Ford explorers. Cost $200 to repair and not covered under extended warranty. Mine came loose while driving fortunately, other's have flown right off the trucks causing a safety issue for other vehicles behind the truck.

Our '14 explorer has consistently allowed exhaust gas to enter the passenger compartment upon 1/2 to full throttle acceleration. Still under warranty, the dealership said they would fix it for about $800! They said it was coming from exhaust entering the rear ac. Ac on or off makes no difference.
The windshield outside pillar/trim molding of a 2014 Ford explorer, flew off car while driving (65mph) on the highway. This is the second incident within less than a year. And from what I gathered from dealership and online research, it's a very well known problem.
Ford service action #17n04. Ford will not complete this service action due to mileage. The driver door panel is peeling back so far that air catches in it and is pushed back by air when driving on the highway with the window down. The door panel gets pushed into the driver and is a safety hazard.
Vehicle was traveling approximately 30-35 mph down a road with no pot holes when the front right lower control arm broke in half. Vehicle lost control and pulled to the right bringing the vehicle into the street curb. Damage to the fender, tire, wheel, cv joint, and other associated parts reported. Door ajar alerts with the door shut. I have to open and slam door to get it to clear. I know this is a common issue and Ford needs to open a recall on this. I do not feel like paying 400 dollars for something they know is messed up due to poor quality.
The dash reads transmission not in park while the shifter is in park position. There is a technical service bulletin regarding this issue but the dealer refused to repair the issue due to the vehicle warranty being expired. Tsb 15-0047

40,000 miles into a new car, rear brakes are completely worn down. The passenger side needed a new temperature door actuator to allow the climate control to work properly.
Rear camera goes black intermittently in our 2014 Ford. While we are backing out of a parking place or out of our driveway it may start as expected but then before we are finished reversing it just goes to a black screen. Other times when we put the car in reverse, the rear camera does not engage at all.

Right rear toe link broke while driving on the highway. Steering was compromised. The left rear toe link also showed signs of stress. This explorer was not included in the NHTSA campaign number: 16v245000 perhaps Ford needs to expand the number of cars recalled due to this issue.

Notified june 2016 of rear suspension link that may fracture which may result in loss of control. As of today, 10/12/16 I have heard nothing from Ford and I am concerned about continued use of the vehicle. How long should this type of repair typically take?
My vehicle has 69k miles with only freeway driving and the struts and bearings already have to be replaced. The cost is $900 at the Ford dealership. I was told that the bearings are worn out causing problems with the struts. Anytime I would drive at low speeds you could hear a loud knocking sound. My nissan is 12 years old and it just now needed similar maintenance. Something is not right with this quality.
