Short answer

The body structure leads the 2017 Ford Explorer record at 22%, with body next at 15%. Of the body structure reports that give a mileage, half came before 76,000 miles. The costliest part on our cost list is the water pump, $26 to $86 for the part alone.

It's a count of reports, not a failure rate. Use it to decide what to inspect before buying, not to grade the car.

What we know beyond the file

Most structure complaints mention a recall, and the body complaints describe trim and roof parts coming loose. Engine complaints lean on leaks and coolant.

Is the 2017 Ford Explorer reliable?

The 2017 Ford Explorer ranks 4th of 16 Explorer model years for owner complaints, and the body structure draws the largest share. The four checks below are what the federal record can say; none of them is a reliability score.

Roof rail covers have repeatedly blown off the vehicle while driving. They have been replaced by Ford under the 3 year/36k warranty 3 times on my vehicle, and have blown off on both sides. They are about 5 feet long pieces of plastic, and certainly present a hazard to cars on the highway behind me when they blow off. The design appears very poor, as they are snapped into place.

Driver side door entry keypad pillar molding, just fell off. It appears to be glued and after time the glue doesn't hold and the whole molding just falls off and hangs from the keyless wires while driving as it scratches up your paint. Dealer wants over $600 to replace.

The driver's and passenger side windshield pillar moldings are loose and coming off and making a vibration sound while driving at any speed over 30 mph. I have read multiple complaints of them flying off while driving and potentially causing an accident to other motorists. I have had them checked by the dealer and there is no recall for them.

Occasionally when I drove the car I felt light headedness and diziniess. On 8/3/2017 I felt the dizziness again and ended up in a car accident. I felt as though I was going to pass out and in a flash I crashed into the car in front of me.

Oil leak around turbo at exhaust. Could be related to the NHTSA vehicle safety recall # 16v925000 as the vehicle has the same 3.5l gtdi engine and seems to have been manufactured during the time frame of the 2017 Ford explorer police interceptor vehicles effected.

The water pump leaked coolant into the engine oil and will cost over $3,000.00 to fix. The Ford exropler engine design with the water pump in the engine is a cash trap for consumers. The design is horrible.

Smell of egg/sulfur in the cabin of the car after rapid acceleration. I had notified the dealership at my last oil change. They didn't seem concerned about it. The smells has continued. Dealership is now telling me to wait till nov 1st. This has been happening since I bought the car in dec 2016 and has steadily gotten worse. I didn't think it was a big deal since the dealership didn't seem concerned.

I bought a 2017 Ford explorer for my daughter to drive back and forth to college. She has been experiencing dizziness, headaches and nearly passed out after driving the vehicle. When I get in the vehicle and start it up, it smells like exhaust inside the vehicle. There is obviously a problem.

Strong exhaust smell in the entire cabin of the vehicle upon exceleration so much so you have to roll down the windows to evacuate the smell. It's an on going problem and just not a one time event. I have a four old daughter that sits in the 2nd row that I'm concerned about.

Before you buy a used 2017 Ford Explorer

These checks follow what 2017 Explorer owners reported most: recall work on the structure, loose trim, then engine leaks. Run the VIN first here, because many complaints are about recall repairs.

Before you buy a 2017 Ford Explorer5 checks to do in person
  1. 1
Run the VIN for open recalls

Only the VIN says if this car got the recall repairs.

  2. 2
Look over the roof and trim

Body complaints describe roof and outer trim parts coming loose.

  3. 3
Look for leaks under the hood

Oil and coolant leaks lead the engine complaints.

  4. 4
    Drive through the low gears

A thump or shudder on the shift shows up in the powertrain complaints.

  5. 5
    Watch the dash at startup

Warning lights and battery faults come up in the electrical complaints.

Oil and service for the 2017 Ford Explorer

This is what Ford's manual says the 2017 Explorer needs: which oil to use and how much, the fluids for the transmission and the cooling system, and when each job is due. The car tracks oil wear itself and shows an oil change message on the dashboard, but Ford says never to go past a year or 10,000 miles.
