Short answer

Both engines in the 2019 Honda CR-V run on 0W-20. With a fresh filter the 2.4 L holds 4.7 US qt (4.4 L), and the 1.5 L turbo holds 3.7 US qt (3.5 L).

Oil type and other oils

Per Honda's owner's manual, fill either engine with Genuine Honda Motor Oil 0W-20, or any premium 0W-20 detergent oil that shows the API Certification Seal.

  • Only 0W-20 is listed. The viscosity chart is a single 0W-20 bar for all outside temperatures, so 5W-20 and 5W-30 are not options.
  • Synthetic is fine as long as it is 0W-20 and carries the API seal.
  • Skip oil additives. Honda warns that they can reduce engine performance and shorten engine life.
  • One oil filter fits every trim and both engines: Honda part 15400-PLM-A02.

Oil capacity

A new filter plus fresh oil takes 4.7 US qt (4.4 L) in the 2.4 L and 3.7 US qt (3.5 L) in the 1.5 L turbo.

Oil life

There is no set mileage for oil changes. The Maintenance Minder tracks the oil life that remains, and from 15% it shows a reminder whenever you start the car. Maintenance Due Soon appears at 15%, and Maintenance Due Now covers 5% down to 1%.

How to reset the oil life

After every oil change, reset the Minder, or its next reminder will come at the wrong time. The steps depend on your instrument cluster:

How to reset with the TRIP knob: 4 steps
  1. With the car stopped, switch the ignition ON.
  2. Press the TRIP knob repeatedly until the Maintenance Minder appears.
  3. Press and hold the knob for 10 seconds or longer. The display blinks.
  4. Rotate the knob to the job you just did, then hold the knob for 5 seconds or longer.
How to reset with the driver information interface: 4 steps
  1. Switch the power mode ON.
  2. Open the Maintenance Minder screen, then press ENTER.
  3. Keep ENTER pressed for about 10 seconds to open reset mode.
  4. Pick the job, or All Due Items, then press ENTER.

For what the percentage means, read Oil change light. To see when yours falls due, use the Oil change interval calculator.

Which engine does your 2019 Honda CR-V have?

LX has the 2.4 L. EX, EX-L and Touring have the 1.5 L turbo
2.4 L, LX184hp
1.5 L turbo, EX and up 190hp
Drive 2WDor AWD

Honda's spec sheet pairs the LX with the 2.4 L engine and the EX, EX-L and Touring with the 1.5 L turbo. Every trim can have 2WD or AWD. The table lists engine, power and wheels per trim for the 2019 Honda CR-V, along with the VIN character that identifies each one.

Trim Engine Power Wheels and tires VIN 8th character
LX2.4 L184 hp, 180 lb-ft 17 in, 235/65R17 104H2 or 3
EX1.5 L turbo 190 hp, 179 lb-ft 18 in, 235/60R18 103H5
EX-L1.5 L turbo 190 hp, 179 lb-ft 18 in, 235/60R18 103H8
Touring 1.5 L turbo 190 hp, 179 lb-ft 18 in, 235/60R18 103H9

The 6th VIN character shows the drive: 1 means 2WD, 2 means AWD. On the LX, an 8th character of 3 pairs with a 6th of 1, while an 8th of 2 pairs with a 6th of 2. That holds for CR-Vs with a VIN starting 2HK. Other plants may differ. Capacities for oil, coolant and A/C change with the engine, so run your car through the VIN decoder before ordering parts.

Lug nut torque 80lb-ft

Honda's owner's manual calls for 32 psi front and 30 psi rear on 17 inch wheels and 33 psi front and 30 psi rear on 18 inch wheels, measured cold. The table adds the kPa values and the tire and wheel sizes for the 2019 Honda CR-V. Your own car's pressure is on the label inside the driver's doorjamb.

Spec 17 inch wheels 18 inch wheels
Front pressure 32 psi (220 kPa) 33 psi (230 kPa)
Rear pressure 30 psi (210 kPa) 30 psi (210 kPa)
Tire size 235/65R17 104H235/60R18 103H
Wheel size 17 x 7 1/2J18 x 7 1/2J
Lug nut torque 80 lb-ft (108 N·m) 80 lb-ft (108 N·m)

The compact spare is a T155/90D17 112M on a 17 x 4T wheel and needs 60 psi (420 kPa). Do not exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) with it, and swap in a full-size tire soon.

TPMS reset (calibration)

After you change a tire's pressure, rotate the tires or replace one, the TPMS needs a fresh calibration.

How to calibrate the TPMS: 4 steps
  1. Inflate all four tires to the cold pressure given above.
  2. Bring the car to a stop, put it in P and switch the ignition ON.
  3. Cars with a TPMS button: keep it pressed until the low tire pressure indicator flashes twice. Cars with Display Audio: open Settings, then Vehicle, then TPMS Calibration, and select Calibrate.
  4. Drive for roughly 30 minutes in total at 30-65 mph (48-105 km/h). Calibration completes without any input. It will not run while the compact spare is fitted.

Tire rotation

Honda sets no mileage for rotations on the 2019 Honda CR-V. Rotate when the Maintenance Minder shows sub-item 1, which keeps wear even and helps the tires last longer. Directional tires move front to back only, never across, with the rotation mark pointing forward. Calibrate the TPMS after each rotation.

Jack points and changing a flat tire

When a tire fails on the road, grip the wheel firmly, brake gently and pull over somewhere safe. Set the jack beneath the jacking point nearest the bad tire so the point's tab sits in the notch on the jack. Use the jack supplied with the car, on firm and level ground, with the engine off and everyone out. Never crawl under a car that only a jack supports.

How to prepare to change the tire: 6 steps
  1. Park on firm, level ground that will not slip, apply the parking brake and select P.
  2. Switch on the hazard lights and turn the ignition to LOCK.
  3. Lift the cargo floor lid and remove the tool bag, the jack and the compact spare.
  4. Chock the wheel diagonally opposite the flat, at the front and the back.
  5. Slide the spare under the car near the flat tire, wheel side up.
  6. Turn each wheel nut loose by about one turn.
How to lift the car: 3 steps
  1. Set the jack under the jacking point nearest the flat.
  2. Turn the end bracket clockwise until the jack's top touches the jacking point.
  3. Use the jack handle bar and the wheel nut wrench to lift the car until the tire clears the ground.
How to put on the spare: 4 steps
  1. Take off the wheel nuts, then the flat tire.
  2. Clean the wheel mounting surfaces and put the spare on.
  3. Thread the nuts on until they touch the wheel, lower the car and pull out the jack.
  4. Follow the tightening order printed in the manual, making two or three rounds, until each nut reaches 80 lb-ft (108 N·m). Do not push on the wrench with your foot or a pipe.

Warning lights

Seven lights that mean stop, and what to do

Honda's owner's manual tells you to pull over at once in a safe spot for the red brake light, the low oil pressure light, a flashing check engine light, overheating, the "something wrong" message, low tire pressure, and a flashing transmission temperature or AWD light. The table lists the stop warnings for the 2019 Honda CR-V and the manual's action for each.

Light What to do
Brake system (red with amber) Stop in a safe place right away and contact a dealer. If the pedal has no resistance, stop at once.
Low oil pressure Stop in a safe place right away. Park on level ground, turn the engine off for about 3 minutes and check the oil level. If the light stays on 10 seconds after a restart, turn the engine off and contact a dealer.
Check engine light, blinking A misfire. Park away from anything flammable, turn the engine off for at least 10 minutes, then see a dealer.
Overheating Park in a safe place right away, turn the accessories off and the hazard lights on. The signs are the gauge needle at the hot mark or a sudden loss of power, the message "Stop Driving When Safe. Engine Temperature Too Hot", or steam or spray from the engine compartment. If you see steam, turn the engine off and wait. With no steam, keep the engine running and open the hood.
"Something wrong" message Stop in a safe place right away and have the car checked.
Low tire pressure Stop in a safe place, check the pressures and inflate the tires.
Transmission temperature or AWD light, blinking Stop in a safe place and shift to P. Let it idle until the light goes off, and see a dealer if it keeps blinking.

The charging system light does not call for an immediate stop. Switch off the climate control, rear defogger and other electrical loads, and call a dealer promptly. If you do pull over, leave the engine running, since a restart could drain the battery. Our dashboard symbols page covers every other symbol.

Always replace a blown fuse with one of the same amp rating. Honda's manual warns that a higher rating makes damage to the electrical system far more likely.

Fuse finder

Use the fuse finder to look up any fuse in either box of the 2019 Honda CR-V, taken from Honda's owner's manual and listed in number order. Tap a number for its circuit and rating, or type a part such as horn or power window. The tiles follow the manual's list rather than the physical box layout, so match the number printed on your own cover or label.

Tap a number

The circuit, its rating and the models it applies to show here.

In the manual, the big fuses 1a to 4d in the engine box sit under cover numbers 1 to 4. A rating in brackets, like (30 A), is printed that way by Honda and usually marks a circuit that not every model has.

Battery

Honda's owner's manual prints no battery group size, only that a replacement needs the same specifications. Honda's parts listing and the Interstate battery finder both point to group 51R for the U.S. 2019 Honda CR-V, with either engine. Read the label on your old battery before buying. For replacement timing, see how long a car battery lasts.

Key fob battery

A smart entry remote in the 2019 Honda CR-V uses a CR2032 battery. The remote with a screw cover uses a CR1620.

Maintenance

Minder codes, spark plugs, filters, wipers 26, 17 and 12 in
Schedule Minder
Wiper blades 26/17/12in
Brake fluid 3years max

The manual sets no mileage schedule for the 2019 Honda CR-V. The Maintenance Minder reports due jobs as codes on the instrument panel display beside the oil life percentage. They show on their own when oil life falls to 15%. To see them at any time, turn the ignition ON and press the TRIP knob until the oil life appears.

How the codes look (our drawing, not the real screen). B 1 2 means an oil and filter change, a tire rotation and new air filters, all due at the next service.

A letter, A or B, marks the main job, and the numbers 1 to 7 mark added jobs. The table explains every Maintenance Minder code for this car. Canadian models have codes of their own.

Code What to do
AReplace the engine oil. If no message shows within 12 months of the reset, change the oil every year.
BReplace the engine oil and filter. Inspect the brakes, steering and suspension parts, driveshaft boots, brake lines, fluid levels, exhaust and fuel lines.
1Rotate the tires.
2Replace the engine air filter and the dust and pollen (cabin) filter. Inspect the drive belt.
3Replace the CVT fluid.
4Replace the spark plugs. Inspect the valve clearance.
5Replace the engine coolant.
6Replace the rear differential fluid (AWD).
7Replace the brake fluid, at least every 3 years.

Two more items appear in the manual: an idle speed check every 160,000 miles, and a valve adjustment only when the valves are noisy.

Spark plugs

Spark plugs get replaced at Maintenance Minder code 4, along with a valve clearance check. Each engine has its own plug, and the manual gives no gap or torque, so buy the exact part from the table.

Fuel and fuel economy

Unleaded 87 octane, 14 gal tank, EPA fuel economy
Fuel Unleaded
Octane 87or higher
Tank 14US gal

Honda's owner's manual specifies unleaded gasoline, 87 octane or higher for the 2019 Honda CR-V, and the tank holds 14 US gal (53 L). The engine tolerates fuel with up to 15% ethanol but never methanol. Honda also suggests TOP TIER detergent gasoline free of manganese (MMT) additives. EPA fuel economy for each engine and drive is in the table.

Engine and drive City Highway Combined
2.4 L, 2WD26 mpg 32 mpg 28 mpg
2.4 L, AWD25 mpg 31 mpg 27 mpg
1.5 L turbo, 2WD28 mpg 34 mpg 30 mpg
1.5 L turbo, AWD27 mpg 33 mpg 29 mpg

Fuel under 87 octane may produce a loud, steady metallic knock that harms the engine. After a fill-up that causes trouble, switch to another station or brand.

How to refuel

This car has no fuel cap, and the fuel door is on the rear left, so park with that side next to the pump.

How to refuel the car: 5 steps
  1. Pull up with the rear left side at the pump and shut the engine off.
  2. Release the fuel door with the handle low on the left of the dashboard.
  3. Push the nozzle all the way in so it rests on the bottom of the filler opening, and keep it level.
  4. Fill until the nozzle shuts off on its own, wait roughly 5 seconds, then withdraw it. Never top off the tank.
  5. Shut the fuel door with your hand.

Use a service station nozzle only, because a siphon hose can harm the filler. When the nozzle keeps shutting off with the tank not full, switch pumps, and if it persists see a dealer.

Low fuel light and range

With about 2.1 US gal (8.0 L) left, the low fuel light turns on, so plan to refuel. A blinking light means a gauge fault that needs checking. An empty tank can cause misfires and ruin the catalytic converter. The range readout uses past trips' fuel economy to estimate the miles left, so it is only a guide.

If you run out of fuel

How to add fuel from a can: 5 steps
  1. Shut the engine off and confirm the can contains gasoline.
  2. Press the fuel door's edge so that it pops open.
  3. Insert the funnel stored in the cargo area tool kit. Use no other funnel or nozzle.
  4. Pour in the fuel gently.
  5. Wipe the funnel, stow it, and close the fuel door by hand.

How to get better fuel economy

The manual's basic advice is to service the car whenever the Maintenance Minder asks, use the recommended oil viscosity, keep tire pressure as on the doorjamb label, avoid carrying extra weight and keep snow and mud off the underside. To measure real fuel economy, divide miles driven by gallons added at a fill-up.

Towing your CR-V

Honda's owner's manual says to call a professional towing service. A flat bed is best for every model. A wheel lift that raises the front tires is acceptable for 2WD models only, which means an AWD CR-V must go on a flat bed. Pulling it behind a motorhome or another vehicle can damage the transmission, the manual warns. Never tow by the bumpers or with only a rope or chain, and use a flat bed if the parking brake will not release.

Jump start

To jump start the 2019 Honda CR-V, attach the positive cable first and put the final negative clamp on the engine hanger, never on your battery. Batteries can explode, so keep sparks, flames and cigarettes away.

How to jump start the 2019 Honda CR-V: 6 steps
  1. Switch off the audio and lights and the engine, then lift the hood.
  2. Attach the first cable to the + terminal on your battery, then to the + terminal on the booster battery. The booster must be 12 volts, and a charger acting as a booster must stay under 15 volts.
  3. Attach the second cable to the - terminal on the booster battery, then to the engine hanger on your engine.
  4. When the booster is another car, start it and raise its rpm a little.
  5. Start your own engine. If it cranks slowly, make sure the clamps touch bare metal firmly.
  6. After the engine runs, take the cables off in this order: engine hanger clamp, booster - terminal, your + terminal, booster + terminal.

Known problems tied to these specs

Two known problems touch these specs on the 2019 Honda CR-V. One is a cylinder head gasket program and the other an A/C compressor seal program, and both remain open.

Program open

Cylinder head gasket

2017 to 2022 CR-V, 1.5 L turbo

Honda Service Bulletin 26-016 (Version 3, September 25, 2026) stretches the cylinder head gasket warranty on 2017 to 2022 CR-Vs to 10 years from purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever ends first. Covered signs include coolant loss, overheating, or a misfire caused by coolant leaking into the cylinders. Misfire codes may be stored, but the repair does not require them. Salvage and branded titles qualify as well. A Honda dealer message from August 2026 grants 6 more months after the owner notice to cars already past the age limit. Eligibility depends on the VIN, so have a Honda dealer check yours. The repair in the bulletin is the one for the 1.5 L turbo.

Under Honda Service Bulletin 23-040 (Version 5, June 19, 2024), the A/C compressor shaft seal warranty on the 2017 to 2022 CR-V 1.5 L turbo grows from 3 years to 10 years after the original purchase date, with no mileage cap. A worn seal lets refrigerant escape. Cars declared a total loss, or sold with a salvage or branded title, are excluded. Eligibility depends on the VIN, so have a Honda dealer check yours.
